A few days ago, the first trailer for the Minecraft movie was released. Now, the creator of the game has spoken out and revealed what he thinks about it.
Which movie is it about? Video game adaptations have been with us for many years, and recent examples like the Super Mario movie show that they can perform very well at the box office. The aforementioned plumber movie grossed a whopping 1.3 billion US dollars worldwide (via boxofficemojo.com).
It was only a matter of time before Minecraft got its own film. A few days ago, a first trailer for the upcoming film was released. Jason Momoa and Jack Black are featured in it, with the latter even playing the iconic hero Steve from the games.
The trailer was far from well-received by fans and was thoroughly ripped apart. The players’ expectations were disappointed by the first glimpse of the film. However, someone who needs to know has spoken out: Markus Persson, also known as Notch, the creator of Minecraft.
Surprisingly Entertaining
What does Notch say? Anyone expecting the game’s creator to criticize the trailer like many fans currently do will be disappointed. Notch seems to be quite pleased:
“Okay, I’m in,” he writes on x.com and adds that it feels strange and quite surreal to see his game in this form.
For a movie about a game with literally zero plot, it looks surprisingly entertaining. I laughed… I think twice. Yes, the sheep got me.
He is also happy about the casting of Jack Black as Steve, calling it “very cool.” The developer was never against a film adaptation from the start. He describes himself as someone who loves the spectacle and is curious to see the film adaptation of his work.
He has a very personal relationship with the game—one that differs from that of most players. It is not important to him to see a faithful adaptation. What matters more is to learn about new and strange approaches for his own ideas.
For this reason, he would have even welcomed a controversial director like Uwe Boll—it would certainly have made the film different. By the way, Notch himself is also somewhat controversial – you can read his story on MeinMMO.
Is Notch involved in the film? As the developer himself writes, he is not part of the project. Rather, it would be a nostalgia trip of a surreal kind for him. He originally “expected much worse” and is now pleased with the film adaptation of his work. A fan has done a favor to many disappointed players by releasing his own version of the controversial trailer.
