For many years, Linus Sebastian, the man behind the YouTube channel “Linus Tech Tips”, was a darling of the community. But for some time now, he has had to deal with ongoing accusations. Even now, he is accused of having known for years what dark dealings the savings app “Honey” was up to, but he did nothing to inform the public about it.
Why is Linus Tech Tips on the defensive? The YouTuber MegaLag released a video before Christmas, in which he accuses the savings app Honey of reprehensible practices: The app did not always show the best deals, as it promised.
Furthermore, there was misconduct with affiliate links, which were exchanged in a non-transparent manner so that Honey profited from it while the influencers promoting Honey ended up with nothing.
The accusation against Linus Tech Tips is that he, as a huge tech YouTuber, collaborated with Honey, but then ended the collaboration because he apparently knew that something was wrong. However, he did not make this public, allowing the “fraud” to continue for years.
The video by MegaLag has now gained over 11 million views, and the accusations carry significant weight.
YouTuber does not understand what this has to do with him
This is what Linus Tech Tips says: The tech YouTuber Linus Tech Tips sees himself once again unfairly accused. He does not understand at all why the accusations should now have anything to do with him.
He ended the partnership with Honey three years ago. Much was already known back then: But these were all things that disadvantaged influencers like him because the exchange of affiliate links cost them money.
If he had known back then that normal customers were also disadvantaged by the provision of false optimal savings coupons, he would probably have raised an alarm sooner, but at that time, one simply did not have an idea of what was going on, says Linus.
I am the victim here
What is he defending against?? Linus Tech Tips is defending against the accusation that he knew more back then and concealed it:
“The situation is bizarre, man. I am a victim here.”
He explains that he and his team were among the influencers who relied on affiliate revenues, and Honey cheated them out of this income.
He also does not like the fact that he is now considered “the biggest influencer who promoted Honey”. He says: MrBeast with his 300 million subscribers is much bigger. He does not understand why he is in the spotlight here.
