The developers of the highly anticipated game Hytale want to forgo a release on Steam – at least initially. They provide a compelling reason for this.
What about Hytale? The story of the game is full of twists. While the sandbox RPG from Hypixel Studios has been in development for a long time, Riot Games, who purchased the developer in 2020, halted development in 2025.
It was only in November 2025 that fans received good news: Hytale is saved and development will continue. However, those expecting the game to be playable on day one on Steam are mistaken.
Because, as a team member revealed, Hytale will voluntarily forgo a launch on Valve’s platform. This is surprising, as Steam is the largest marketplace for games worldwide and could serve as a great marketing tool.
However, the developers have a good reason for the forgoing.
Collaboration with the community is more important than reach
What do the developers say? Patrick ‘Lyall’ Derbic is the Executive Director for Hytale and has answered several burning questions about the game in the FAQ on the official website.
Among these is the question about a possible release on Steam. Derbic justifies the decision not to appear on the platform for the early access launch as follows:
We want to spend our time in early access collaborating with the community and improving the game, rather than focusing too much on negative reviews from players who are not well-informed about our work.
Indeed, negative reviews on Steam are not uncommon. In some cases, this even escalates into so-called “review-bombing,” when a game becomes the target of a massive, targeted flow of bad reviews, often for unjustified reasons.
Whether Hytale would face such a fate is questionable. However, the developers seem to want to play it safe and not let themselves be disturbed by potential players who are not currently following the project and may have a false impression of it.
More important than great visibility on Steam seems to be the exchange with the community that has actively followed and supported Hytale up to now.
Will Hytale never appear on Steam then? That is not yet definitively established. At this time, the FAQ states:
Steam is a great marketing tool that we may never need. This does not mean that we will never be present on Steam – we just do not see a need for it at this time.
When will Hytale be playable? The title will already launch in early access on January 13, 2026, and will cost $19.99. The price in euros will be approximately similar. In addition to the standard edition, there will also be supporter packs that can cost up to $69.99.
Now we want to know your opinion on the subject. Are you bothered that Hytale will not initially be available on Steam, or do you not care about this aspect? Feel free to let us know in the comments. The developers currently warn that the game will be unfinished at the launch of early access and are therefore even issuing a purchase warning.
