For several years, players have been speculating and hoping for a successor to GTA V, which was released nearly 7 years ago. However, according to recent reports, it may still be in early development. Many fans and experts from the developer Rockstar doubt this, though.
What happened? The website Kotaku reported in an article about Rockstar, the developer of GTA and Red Dead Redemption, that the next big project is said to be in “early development stage”.
This is likely referring to a next title in the GTA series, which Kotaku itself mentioned in a previous paragraph.
However, this statement has raised many doubts, including from a person known for insider contacts at Rockstar. Many of them believe that GTA 6 should already be much further along.
Is Kotaku wrong with the statement?
What do the doubters say? User Yan2295 is known for his contacts with the developer. He used these for a while to share information and leaks about the studio, like the nightclubs of GTA V. At the request of Take-Two and out of respect for the developer, he stopped doing this in September 2018.
But in the course of the discussion about GTA 6, he chimed in on the forum regarding the topic. There he wrote:
Can Jason [Schreier, the author of Kotaku] be trusted? Yes, he knows the industry, he knows people, he takes his job very seriously and he does not do it half-heartedly.
Is GTA VI in early development? Certainly not, no way.
In response to a statement on Twitter, Yan2295 also stated that GTA 6 could not be in an early development stage unless there was a strange definition. He thinks it’s possible that an early stage of testing might be meant, but not the development itself.
Who else spoke up? On Twitter, user Tez2 also commented. He claims to observe the developments of games, especially those of Rockstar.
He also expressed doubts about Kotaku’s statement:
The next game, a new GTA title, is in an “early development stage”? It’s hard to believe when I hear it’s already halfway done or even further.

How far along is GTA 6 really? On reddit, some users speculate that Rockstar could adopt a similar strategy as with GTA V.
Back then, just a few days before the official announcement, Rockstar reportedly stated in an interview that no sequel was currently in the works. A few days later, there was a twist.
Whether and how far GTA 6 really is, only the developer knows for sure. However, it is clear that the interest in a successor is high, as evidenced by a fake event on Twitch where over 60,000 fans tuned in.
