If there is one character from The Boys that is most prominently shown online, it is Homelander. This is also due to the grand performance by Anthony Starr, who spoke about Homelander as an idol in an interview in the context of Season 4.
Warning Spoiler: The following article contains very light spoilers for Season 4 of The Boys.
How does Anthony Starr describe Homelander? The New Zealand actor talked to Vulture in the context of the finale of Season 4 of The Boys . There he expressed his views on the implications of the finale and, of course, about his character.
In the interview, he begins by describing Homelander. He compares the end of the season to the end of the second act in a film. Here he also talks about how he has to portray Homelander. He wants to portray him as a narcissist and fascist who has won.
He compares Homelander and his supporters to the Empire from Star Wars. In the interview, he explains how he wants to make Homelander a three-dimensional character. People should not idolize Homelander
Despite Homelander’s sad past, he is not a character to whom one should show sympathy and empathy, as that is not an excuse for his actions. Starr describes him as someone who has multiple sides, depending on whether he appears in public or acts in private.
Despite his clearly evil actions and function as an antagonist, many fans seem to see Homelander as an idol. Anthony Starr does not think this is good, as he reveals in the interview.
The strange thing is that some people idolize him and see him as a kind of leader for their own cause in the real world, which is a bit disturbing.
Despite this, he believes that by the end of the current season, these people will realize that he is not a hero or an idol, but the villain.
Starr does not want to take a political side. In the interview, he also agrees with series creator Eric Kripke that Homelander shares a lot with Donald Trump. He does not want to offend anyone and believes that there are people on both sides who are just afraid. He is not the character from the series; he is just playing him. Starr only wants to encourage people to use the democratic system
