The famous Hollywood actor Russell Crowe believes that actors are mistaken who expect Marvel and DC to change their lives. He responds to an interview from a colleague.
What interview did he respond to? In early 2024, Madame Web premiered with lead actress Dakota Johnson in theaters. The film flopped completely and became one of the worst Marvel movies:
- On IMDB, Madame Web only scores 4.0 out of 10 possible points. Only The Fantastic Four from 1994 and Captain America from 1990 received worse ratings on the platform.
- On Rotten Tomatoes, the film even scores only 11 out of 100% with critics. At least it gets a recommendation of 57% from fans.
In an interview with Bustle, Dakota Johnson lamented over the major failure. She blames the creative management of the Sony company for it. For Johnson, it is the director and the actors who determine the creativity in the film, not a committee:
You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms. I have felt for a long time that the audience is extremely smart, and the executives have started to believe that they are not. The audience will always be able to recognize bullsh*t.
For her, it has definitely been an experience to be in such a film. However, she already knows that she will never again stand in front of the camera for such films. Just recently, GQ Magazine asked Hollywood legend Russell Crowe what he thought of his colleague’s opinion.

Russell Crowe does not consider comic book adaptations to be career-defining
What did he respond to Johnson’s interview? Russell Crowe himself has a lot of experience in the comic book hero universe. He has appeared in Man of Steel, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Kraven the Hunter. However, for him, these were just jobs that did not significantly influence his career:
These are jobs. You know: Here is your role, play the role. If you expect this to be some kind of life-changing event, then you are here for the wrong reasons.
For him, these are just “damn universes for cartoon characters.” They may be gigantic films of significant size, but as an actor, one should not expect to achieve a great breakthrough with such films.
