What do the wings provide?

Wings in Guild Wars 2 serve to change your appearance and distinguish you cosmetically from other players. However, wings also have a practical use. With them, you can glide. This allows you to quickly descend from a higher point to a lower one or traverse further distances while floating. This also gives you advantages in combat, but not in PvP and only in areas where gliding is not “restricted.” In WvW, gliding must be unlocked.

You can acquire wings and other gliding objects either through the Item Shop or by crafting legendary items.
