Path of Exile is a classic hack&slash game in the style of Diablo and was released in 2013 by the New Zealand developer Grinding Gear Games. The game impresses especially with its continuous development, incredible character customization variety, and the high replay value associated with it.
Mighty Variety!
Path of Exile contains a total of 19 classes. They consist of basic classes called Duelist, Shadow, Marauder, Witch, Ranger, Templar, and “Scion” as well as the selectable Ascendancy classes.
There is a huge skill tree – more like a “skill galaxy!” – with passive skills from which you can freely build your character. There are up to 123 points to allocate, plus 8 “Ascendancy points.” So you have a mighty variety! Hardly two builds in the game are alike!
This allows you to create sometimes absurd, creative, and funny builds, such as a highly effective melee witch or the otherwise fragile duelist as a tank.
Even More Variety Through Items
With unique items, you can further enhance your build. There is a special axe that creates fireballs with every hit, which then bounce around like crazy. Such an item practically invites you to build the rest of your character around rampaging fireballs.
As you often find new things or discover new skill synergies, Path of Exile is the perfect game for crafters, optimizers, and micromanagers. It’s just a blast to tinker with your character until you can conquer the currently toughest challenges.
Constant Expansion of Game Content!
Path of Exile is by no means stagnant. Instead of the former 3 acts, there are now 10. Epic boss fights await you, which are hardly inferior to raid boss fights in MMORPGs. In the endgame, you can play on special maps that become progressively harder. In return, the loot becomes better and more powerful.
Every few months there is a new “league.” This corresponds roughly to the “seasons” in Diablo. New gameplay mechanics are often introduced, passive skills are rebalanced, and you have to start all over again. Thus, all players have the same starting conditions.
