In Dungeons & Dragons there are many diverse peoples – many often prefer the classics like humans, elves, dwarves, or orcs. Here we introduce 7 exciting races you can play if “classic” is too boring for you.
Many games repeatedly rely on the classic races in role-playing games, such as humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, which are as common in fantasy as sand on the beach. The tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons is no exception (see for example YouTube).
However, there are over 100 different races and variants, which can not only make your role-playing significantly more interesting but also provide very useful gameplay mechanics and advantages. Therefore, we present 7 species here that you should not miss because they fly somewhat under the radar.
Genasi

Genasi are a race of half-elemental beings derived from the union of mortals and the powers of the elemental planes. They combine human traits with the powers of earth, fire, water, or air, which strongly shapes their appearance and abilities.
Each of the four variants – earth, fire, water, and air Genasi – brings its own advantages. Earth Genasi can move through earth, fire Genasi have natural fire protection and can create flames, water Genasi can breathe underwater and move effortlessly in it, while air Genasi are particularly fast and do not even need to breathe.
All Genasi also receive a small spell focus since each variant has access to magical abilities that correspond to their element. This offers players a great variety of opportunities to create visually and mechanically distinct characters that stand out from the classic fantasy races.
