That’s pretty much what the actor thought about 19 years ago when a new actor was being sought for the legendary agent. Cavill wanted to play the role desperately and went to an audition.
There he met director Martin Campbell, who was to direct Casino Royale. The actor was to play a scene from one of the old movies with Sean Connery. Only dressed in a towel, he was to step out of the bathroom. Cavill recounts this casting to MensHealth:

Cavill was rejected, among other reasons, due to his physical condition. Instead, Daniel Craig got the role and initially caused quite a stir. After all, he was blonde and did not fit the classic image of Bond.
Cavill fits that description more closely, and to this day he dreams of playing the role after all. He has since shown his physical fitness. If he were given the chance to embody 007, the actor would not have to think twice.
Will Cavill get the role? Daniel Craig has finished as Bond, and it is still unknown who will play the character next. However, it is rather unlikely that Henry Cavill will receive the offer. On one hand, at 41 years old he is a bit too old – he would have to play the role for several years, maybe even decades.
