Place 5: Shieldmaiden
When it comes to gaining armor for Warriors, the Shieldmaiden has become an indispensable asset in most Garrosh and Muradin decks. For 6 mana, it offers solid stats of 5/5 and as a Battlecry adds another 5 armor points. This fueled many shield slams and often the extra points saved the Warrior from an ugly demise in the next round.
Such cards were often paired with Reno Jackson to force the opponent into the task they had chosen while wearing a satisfied grin.
Place 4: Imp-losion
The Imp-losion of the Warlock is praised for its versatility. While there is a certain element of randomness in the card, it can still be planned relatively well. For 4 mana, the Warlock deals 2-4 damage to a minion and creates as many 1/1 Imps as damage dealt. Again, this can be wonderfully combined with a Knife Juggler, who throws a knife at his unsuspecting opponents for each Imp. Moreover, one could quickly flood the board with the spell to summon expensive Sea Giants.
Place 3: Mechanical Yeti
Among the most popular RNG surprise eggs from Goblins VS. Gnomes was the Mechanical Yeti. For 4 mana, you get a relatively solid 4/3 mech on the board that also summons a random 2-mana minion upon its death through its deathrattle. As there are quite a few useful representatives among the 2-mana creatures – such as the Knife Juggler, Teacher Cho, or the Doom Seer – the Yeti typically pays off.
It was particularly annoying for Priests since it dealt 4 damage power, rendering it just outside the reach of both Shadow Words, often forcing poor trades or having to consume much stronger spells. Even after its destruction, something remains behind. That was quite “sticky.”.
Place 2: Sludge Belcher
The strength of the Sludge Belcher was only guessed at the beginning. In almost every deck that was in any way focused on control or countering rush decks, the undead Glutton has secured a fixed place. This is not surprising, as to get rid of him, one has to either expend a silence effect, of which there are traditionally only a few in the deck, or at least two attacks. Because for 5 mana, the Sludge Belcher has “only” stats of 3/5 and Taunt, but upon its death, it summons a 1/2 Slime that also has Taunt.
Again, “sticky” is the defining attribute.
Place 1: Dr. Boom
Hardly any card has received more synonyms and nicknames than the dreaded Dr. Boom. As “Dr. Balanced”, “Dr. Win” or “Dr. 7”, he made a name for himself. Because for 7 mana, the legendary goblin not only displayed solid stats of 7/7, but also summoned 2 1/1 Boom Bots that dealt 1-4 damage to a random minion as their deathrattle. In the best case, one could get a 17/9 minion for 7 mana.
No other card has thus far matched this value, and it is not surprising that there was only one card for the 7 mana slot in almost every deck: Dr. Boom. We will always keep him in our hearts and be grateful that he is no longer the only win condition in countless decks. In any case, a well-deserved number 1 on our list.
Which card would you have liked to see on the list? Which card are you particularly sad to see go?
