The stagnant meta and the random factor are still important topics for the Hearthstone community.
The complaints about Hearthstone are similar every few months, yet Blizzard fails to address these issues in the long term: The meta is stagnant. In the ranked play mode, the same decks prevail and a real change hasn’t been brought by “One Night in Karazhan” either. The best decks have only gotten a little better, while new ideas are often snuffed out in their infancy.
The well-known pro player Brian Kibler has shared his thoughts on this subject and discussed what Hearthstone needs: More cards in a shorter time and fewer changes to already existing cards. Because that would only further alienate fans from the game.
Additionally, he criticizes the “Wild” format, which is hardly used due to nerfs on various cards. Those who played a cool Handlock with “Melted Giants” back then can no longer have that experience – because the giant is now simply a very bad card.
Randomness is important, but perception is wrong
Another problem is the random factor in Hearthstone – however, not the factor itself, but how it is perceived by players. Especially Yogg-Saron is seen in a negative light, although he very rarely decides a game. When Yogg-Saron is played at the end of a match, viewers often forget how it looked before Yogg-Saron and readily claim “Yogg won the game”, even if the Yogg player was already winning (and sometimes even when Yogg caused more negative effects).
Kibler believes that the random factor is important for a game like Hearthstone, as otherwise – unlike a physical card game – it would be too boring, given that the conditions are quite rigid.
