What is HBO Max? This is the streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery, which launched in the USA in 2020. Similar to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or Disney+, HBO Max offers a rich selection of movies and series that can be streamed as usual after signing up for a monthly subscription.
When will HBO be available in Germany? HBO Max will start here on January 13, 2026. The service will also make its debut in other European countries such as Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, or Luxembourg.
Where is HBO Max available? The service can be accessed via the browser and the official website, or through the HBO Max app. This app can be downloaded on compatible devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers, smart TVs, gaming consoles, or televisions.
Everything about the price, subscription models, and trial subscription of HBO Max
How much does HBO Max cost? The streaming service offers three subscription models, which vary in price and provide different options:
- Basic with ads: For €5.99 (€6.99 from January 1, 2027) per month, you can stream in Full HD on up to 2 devices simultaneously, but you will have to endure ad interruptions.
- Standard: For €11.99 (€12.99 from January 1, 2027) per month, you can stream in Full HD on up to two devices simultaneously – ad-free. You also have up to 30 downloads available, even if HBO Max refers to “restrictions” here. Presumably, not all movies and series will be available for download.
- Premium: For €16.99 (€17.99 from January 1, 2027) per month, you can stream in 4K UHD & Dolby Atmos (if available) on up to 4 devices simultaneously. There are also no ads here and you can make up to 100 downloads.
- Sports add-on: Sports fans can add live sports events to any model for an additional €3 per month.
What else should you know about HBO Max subscriptions? All subscription models run indefinitely and are billed monthly from your account.
Furthermore, it should be possible to subscribe to HBO Max not only as a direct subscription but also as an additional subscription from Prime Video. The same applies to RTL+, where there is even a bundle that combines both services:
- For €11.99 per month, you get RTL+ Premium and HBO Max Basic with ads. Separately, you would pay €15.98.
- For €17.99 per month, you get RTL+ Premium and HBO Max Standard (without ads). Separately, you would pay €24.98.
Is there a trial subscription for HBO Max? At launch, there is no option to try HBO Max for free. The service is following competitors who have gradually phased out previously available trial periods in most cases.
Movies and Series – Everything about the offerings of HBO Max
What movies and series are available on HBO Max? The service has a large selection of popular movies and series. Since HBO Max belongs to Warner Bros., most productions from this studio are naturally gathered in the platform’s catalog.
This includes films such as the Harry Potter series, Dune, DC productions like the Superman released in 2025, or rather current films like One Battle After Another.
On the series front, the service impresses with classics such as Friends, The Wire, The Sopranos, The Big Bang Theory, The Last of Us, or Game of Thrones. The latter franchise will receive a new spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, starting January 18, 2026, which will also premiere exclusively on HBO Max.
