Ravenclaw is one of the four Hogwarts houses in Harry Potter. It may not be as well-known as Gryffindor or Slytherin, but some famous witches and wizards come from this house. In this list, we are on a quest to find the ten most powerful Ravenclaws of all time. Who is the most powerful?
What does Ravenclaw stand for? Ravenclaw students are often seen as bookworms and nerds. However, there is much more to this house. Common traits include intelligence, sharpness, cleverness, wisdom, creativity, and individuality.
Ravenclaw at a glance:
- House colors: Bronze and blue (books), silver and blue (movies)
- Animal: Eagle (books), raven (movies)
- House ghost: The Grey Lady
- Common room: Ravenclaw Tower
Before we start ranking, a few last words from the Sorting Hat:
If you’re quick in thought, both learned and wise,
Then I wager you’ll set off to Ravenclaw’s surprise.
Attention Spoiler: To explain the ranking, various events from movies and books will be spoiled.
Rank 10: Ulrich the Funny Owl

We start this ranking with a slightly lesser-known but all the more eccentric figure. Ulrich “the funny owl” was a wizard in medieval times who is still known for his peculiar nature.
He liked to wear unusual “hats” on his head, such as a jellyfish or a dead badger. He also enjoyed studying the screams of magical birds.
Once he locked himself in a room with 50 Augureys for weeks. Their scream was then considered an omen of death. After a while, Ulrich thought he must now be a ghost who could float through walls. Only a severe concussion convinced him otherwise.
Although Ulrich is better known as an eccentric than a powerful wizard, he is still among the most famous Ravenclaws. He even has his own Chocolate Frog card. Additionally, he must have been good at dealing with magical creatures. Thus, he makes it to the last place in this ranking.
Rank 9: Millicent Bagnold
Millicent Bagnold was the British Minister of Magic for ten years. She was in office when James and Lily Potter were murdered, and thus also during the first downfall of Lord Voldemort.
After this victory, there was nationwide celebration, which seriously jeopardized the “Statute of Secrecy.” Bagnold became famous for her words: “I hereby assert our indispensable right to celebrate.”
While not much is known about her magical abilities, she did manage to reach the position of Minister of Magic and is among the most famous Ravenclaws. She also received her own Chocolate Frog card, placing her at rank 9.
Rank 8: Sibyll Trelawney
Sibyll Trelawney descends from the famous seer Cassandra. As a Divination teacher, she is little respected because her predictions often sound randomly made up.
Only twice in her life did she make “real” prophecies:
- That of Harry’s birth and the fall of Lord Voldemort
- The one about Voldemort’s return in Harry’s third year
Both times she was in a trance and couldn’t remember what happened afterward. However, other prophecies also turned out to be true later. For example, she indirectly foretold Dumbledore’s death.
Were these just lucky guesses? Or is Sibyll Trelawney truly more powerful than she initially appears? This is not entirely clear, but her two “real” prophecies were so important that she makes it to rank 8 in this ranking.
Rank 7: Quirinus Quirrell
The stuttering Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher from Harry’s first year doesn’t seem particularly powerful at first. But behind his shy facade – or rather, behind his turban – there was more.
Quirrell had a great fascination for the Dark Arts, became Voldemort’s servant, and housed him on the back of his head for almost a year.
In this, he proved to be extremely useful for his dark master. Quirrell was a capable wizard who also mastered non-verbal magic without a wand. He easily overcame all the protections surrounding the Philosopher’s Stone, placing him at rank 7 in this ranking.
