Place 3: Badass Ginny
A change that seemingly frustrates most “Harry Potter” fans is the character of Ginny Weasley. In the films, she often appears to be reserved. Her relationship with Harry seems forced, and she doesn’t get much screen time overall.
In the books, however, Ginny is really tough. She always has a cheeky remark ready, doesn’t let anyone push her around, and stands up to Harry as well. You can really tell that she grew up with six older brothers. She was a much more interesting character overall, and not just Harry’s love interest.
Place 2: Voldemort’s Past
Who was Voldemort actually? How did he become who he is? In the sixth book, Harry regularly has special lessons with Dumbledore. There, they visit memories in the Pensieve that reveal Voldemort’s past. While there were a few such scenes in the film, they only scratch the surface.
In the book, for example, we learn that Voldemort himself is a half-blood. His mother, a witch, enchanted a Muggle with a love potion. She became pregnant, but the Muggle eventually left her. In desperation, without a home and money, she abandoned her newborn in an orphanage.
Later, Voldemort tracked down his Muggle father and killed him. Similar to Harry, Voldemort found his first real home at Hogwarts and even wanted to become a teacher there.
Place 1: Neville, the Chosen One
The entire storyline of Harry Potter revolves around Harry being “the Chosen One” who must defeat Voldemort. This is, of course, very simplistic and clichéd. But what if Harry was not the real Chosen One?
In the books, we learn that the prophecy was not explicitly about Harry. It also fit someone else entirely: Neville Longbottom. Only the fact that Voldemort believed Harry to be the Chosen One made him actually become one.
If he had chosen Neville or neither of them, everything might have turned out quite differently. Because not every prophecy must necessarily come true.
