After long preparation and development, the Witcher card game GWENT is getting a mobile version. You will be able to play it on iOS devices in 2019, and later also on Android.
It has been confirmed: In an official announcement on the GWENT homepage, the developers wrote on March 27 that Gwent will appear for iPhones “later this year.” The Game Director of Gwent, Jason Slama, says:
We have long and hard prepared to adapt GWENT for smartphones. In addition to beautiful visuals, we have tailored much of our technology to support mobile devices, including GOG Galaxy, which supports GWENT’s multiplayer.
I believe our vision for GWENT on smartphones combines the best we have to offer in terms of graphics and gameplay.
A date for the iOS version has not yet been announced. Although an Android version is planned, there is also no specific date for that.
Can I transfer my progress from PC? There has been no comment on this yet. More details about the mobile version are expected later in the year.
What is GWENT? GWENT is a card game that many RPG fans probably know from the famous and popular Witcher series. In The Witcher 3, players can challenge NPCs to the card game GWENT and win rewards.
In Gwent, you build decks from various factions with different leaders, which you can also encounter in the Witcher works:
- Monsters
- Scoia’tael
- Nilfgaard
- Skellige
- Northern Realms
You play cards on different rows of the game board. The cards have various values. There are also various abilities of the cards and the leaders. The goal is to have more points than the opponent at the end of a round. Whoever wins two out of three rounds of the game wins.
GWENT was already announced as a standalone game at E3 2016. In 2017 it entered the alpha and beta phases and was officially released in October 2018.
Here’s the status of GWENT: Even in the early phases, GWENT convinced some major streamers so much that they even dropped Hearthstone for it. However, during development, GWENT faced some difficulties that it aimed to resolve half a year before release.
On March 28, the first official expansion, Crimson Curse, will be released, introducing several new leaders and more than 100 new cards to the game.
However, the game seems to be doing quite well now. According to the statistics website SullyGnome, thousands of viewers regularly watch streamers on Twitch as they play GWENT.
