For 13 years, Guild Wars 2 has been a staple in the MMORPG landscape. Now, a major update has been announced for the first part to modernize the classic on Steam. The entry will also be made easier with a new bundle.
What is happening with Guild Wars? The ArenaNet team announced Guild Wars Reforged on November 18, 2025. As the name suggests, it is a new version of the MMORPG Guild Wars, which originally released in 2005.
The new version of the game is set to be released on December 3, 2025, making the overall experience more accessible and modern for new players. However, Guild Wars Reforged is also designed to benefit veterans, as it is said to be more than just a one-time update.
Updates on visuals, technology, and pricing
What is behind Guild Wars Reforged? In an announcement on the official website, the developers revealed what can be expected from the new Reforged version. The major update is led by the team 2weeks, which consists of former ArenaNet employees. They have disclosed the first innovations in the announcement:
- There will be a new bundle for €19.99, which is supposed to include the expansions Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall. If you have already purchased one of the expansions, all will be unlocked with Reforged.
- There will still be no subscription.
- The new version is verified for the Steam Deck, and Reforged is also expected to be playable with modern controllers.
- Additionally, a revamped UI and new visual updates with new effects, better lighting, and improved textures will be included.
- Furthermore, simpler navigation through quest tracking systems and a guide for controls will be possible.
Reforged is an update for the existing game; apart from the DLCs, the innovations are free. In the announcement, the developers also mention that it will not just be a one-time update, and they aim to continue improving the game with the help of 2weeks. However, the details about the future are not clear from the announcement.
In 2025, Guild Wars received minor updates in the form of bug fixes. Reforged seems to be a major overhaul of the 20-year-old game, aimed at attracting newcomers and bringing veterans back.
