Goat of Duty is a new shooter on the market where goats battle it out in fights reminiscent of the classic shooter Quake. Our author Benedict had the chance to play it. And it is as crazy as it sounds.
What is Goat of Duty? Goat of Duty is a multiplayer shooter that aims to build on the success of its genre predecessors. It was introduced in early May as a “crazy multiplayer shooter with goats.”
In fact, that is pretty much what it is. A multiplayer shooter where the main focus is on the action – and where I play as a goat. Why? Well, why not?
When is Goat of Duty coming out?Goat of Duty will be available on Steam. However, a specific release date is not yet known.
How does Goat of Duty play?
First of all: I played Goat of Duty in its development phase. My impression of the game does not correspond to what the finished game can offer. In particular, I still missed the ability to play against human players. But even the existing bots that I shot at gave me a hard time.
This is how the levels are structured: The three available maps are roughly structured as you would expect from the classic shooter Quake or the relatively new successor Quake Champions.
There are many floating platforms, angles, and jump pads to navigate in three dimensions. Everything is incredibly fast, and health packs and weapons are available at certain locations for pickup and combat.
This is how the gameplay is: And it plays almost exactly like Quake. In the rounds, I jump and run across the maps trying to get to the good weapons before my opponents – preferably a rocket launcher, which has been the most effective so far. Other crazy weapons that I have discovered so far include:
- a blade launcher that fires saw blades and launches enemies into the air
- a grenade launcher
- a kind of sonic weapon that pushes enemies back and off the map into nothingness
- a truly nasty flamethrower
I haven’t been able to discover things like armor or wall jumps yet. However, the goats have the ability to perform headbutts. They charge at an enemy, deal significant damage, and if lucky, knock them into death.
How brutal is Goat of Duty: There is also plenty of blood and flying body parts like in Quake Champions. The goats can be decapitated, and when that happened to me, I was still able to hop around briefly in death. Grotesque but… funny.
The game is played in the only mode available to me, “Free for All” within a time limit. Whoever has the most points (kills) at the end of the time wins. The fact that I and my opponents are goats is barely noticeable. This “detail” often fades away in the heat of battle, and the shooting takes center stage.

Graphically, Goat of Duty is not necessarily “realistic,” which would not fit the goat theme at all. The environment is colorful, a bit cartoony, and fits the bizarre idea of shooting goats.
It also runs very smoothly on a gaming PC at the highest resolution, which is necessary given the high speed.
These are cool features in the game
Aside from the fact that all players are goats, Goat of Duty offers some cool features:
- with “Goatsumes” (skins), the appearance of the goats can be customized. Particularly cool: the “Fallgoat,” which is inspired by Fallout.
- Statistics give an overview of how well you are playing
- a proper metal soundtrack gives Goat of Duty a real Doom feeling
- many weapons have alternative firing modes
- there is a “Rage Quit” button. It does exactly that: You leave the game! Immediately and without further prompts.
Conclusion
For a few rounds, Goat of Duty is really entertaining simply because of its absurdity. Those who like Quake will surely appreciate the game more.
