On November 3rd, the Gengar Day starts in Pokémon GO. We will show you the best counters and explain what you need to pay attention to.
The Gengar Day will take place on November 3rd for three hours. During this time, the Ghost Pokémon Gengar will dominate all gyms, and you can challenge it at any gym during this period.
Special Moves: Similar to the days of the legendary birds Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos, Gengar also learns special moves.

Overview of Gengar Day
What Raid Level is Gengar? During the three hours, Gengar will appear as a Level 4 Raid. Previously, Gengar was always a Level 3 Raid boss, but for these three hours, it has been made stronger and appears as a Level 4 Raid.
When does it start? On Saturday, November 3rd, Gengar Day starts at 11 AM. The event will then run for three hours until 2 PM.
At almost all gyms: During the three hours, Gengar will dominate almost all gyms. Gyms that have recently released an EX Raid Pass are excluded. These will not have a raid during the 3 hours. Otherwise, you can raid at any gym.
5 free Raid Passes: Players will receive five free Raid Passes for spinning a gym photo disc once during the event. Players can redeem the passes during the three hours.
Shiny Gengar: In the raids, you can encounter a shiny Gengar. So make sure to pay close attention when catching. The difference is not easy to recognize.
Two exclusive moves: During the three hours, Gengar can learn two exclusive moves: the Ghost-type fast move Lick and the Psychic-type charged move Confusion. You can find out how strong Gengar’s new moves are here.
100% IV Gengar: The CP that a Gengar can obtain from a raid ranges from 1420 CP to 1496 CP. A 1496 CP Gengar has 100% IV. In cloudy or overcast weather, Gengar’s CP ranges from 1776 to 1870. Here, a 1870 CP Gengar is a 100% IV Gengar.
Doable with two: A Gengar has 31256 CP in the raid and is therefore doable with two players. However, it is important that you have the right counters for this. If you have these, it is enough if two trainers are at level 30.
Update November 3rd: After the Gengar Day ran in Asia, the following things can be added:
- Gengar also learns the two exclusive moves Lick and Confusion if you evolve a Haunter into Gengar during the three hours.
- You can teach a Gengar with Lick and Confusion other moves using TMs.
- Gengar cannot learn Lick or Confusion through TMs
Gengar Counters – These Pokémon are effective
Gengar is a Ghost and Poison type and therefore has the following weaknesses: Ground, Psychic, Ghost, and Dark
With the following Pokémon, you can best challenge a Gengar and deal the most damage.
The best counters
- Mewtwo with Confusion and Shadow Ball
- Gengar with Dark Claw (this move is no longer obtainable) and Shadow Ball
- Espeon with Confusion and Future Sight
Also strong counters
- Alakazam with Confusion and Future Sight
- Groudon with Mud Shot and Earthquake (especially strong in sunny weather)
- Gardevoir with Confusion and Shadow Ball
- Tyranitar with Bite and Crunch
- Metagross with Zen Headbutt and Meteor Mash
Alternative counters
These counters may not be the best, but if you’re in a larger group and have no other Pokémon available, you can use the following Pokémon:
- Lugia with Aeroblast and Future Sight (players who have few potions are well served here)
- Banette with Dark Claw and Shadow Ball
- Latios with Zen Headbutt and Confusion
- Houndoom with Snarl and Foul Play
- Sharpedo with Bite and Crunch
- good Dragon attackers like Dragonite, Salamence, or Rayquaza
