For years, users of the Steam Deck have requested a long-awaited feature. Finally, the players’ prayers were answered when Valve’s CEO fulfilled their wish just days after his birthday.
What feature is it about? Steam brings the function of “Screen-Off Downloads” in the new beta update. This allows downloading games while the Steam Deck’s screen is off. After the downloads are complete, the device automatically goes into sleep mode. This not only saves battery but also helps the longevity of the device.
Especially the OLED models could benefit from the update. OLED screens can develop “burn-in” over long periods with static images. This represents damage to the display that occurs particularly in OLEDs: static elements like menus become permanently visible and impair the display. LCD variants of the Steam Deck also benefit from the feature. The saved battery life of about 50 percent during downloads and practical application have been confirmed in our self-test.

How do I get the update from Valve? The developer has currently only released the update in the beta channel. The update might therefore still contain bugs, which is why you might wait for the official release. However, if you still want to install the update, proceed as follows:
- Press the “Steam Button,” then “System,” and select “Beta” under “Channel: System Updates.”
- The Steam Deck will then restart.
- Then go back to “System” and install the update. All beta updates from 05.11.2025 should include the feature.

Community has long requested the feature
Why does the community want this function? Long download times are annoying, and keeping the Steam Deck’s screen active or reducing the brightness to a minimum is impractical for long download times. It wastes unnecessary battery, even though the screen does not need to be on. Therefore, users have long demanded a solution to their problems.
Additionally, the handheld had to be used repeatedly before the update; otherwise, the Steam Deck would default to sleep mode after five minutes, pausing all downloads.
