Games are getting bigger and taking up a lot of space. Many gamers are not prepared for this.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Forspoken, and Redfall have two things in common: on one hand, they all had a technically disastrous release; on the other hand, all three titles consume a massive amount of storage space.
All three games require more than 100 GB, and that could become a problem for some gamers in the long term. New games, especially AAA titles, are getting bigger and need more space. Not all players have large drives installed in their systems. Meanwhile, prices have been dropping for months.
About 50% of all players have storage space with less than 1 TB installed
What does the current situation look like? According to the “Steam” hardware survey from April 2023, 49% of all players have more than 1 TB of storage installed in their systems. All other users have significantly less. A quarter of all players have between 250 GB and 499 GB in their systems.
In the future, there could be a chronic shortage of space among gamers. Games are getting bigger, but the space on the systems is limited. In the long run, some may be forced to upgrade or have to say goodbye to a few beloved games that simply take up too much space.
Storage space is cheaper than it has been in years
How bad is the problem really? New storage is significantly faster to install and purchase than a graphics card that costs several hundred euros. Prices for SSDs are decreasing and many popular SSDs are more affordable than they were years ago.
For the popular Samsung SSD 980 PRO 1 TB, you paid more than 200 euros in November 2020, today you pay around 80 euros. Prices for hard drives (HDDs) are looking quite similar.

In many cases, such an upgrade is also straightforward. Ideally, the new hard drive or SSD is simply inserted into the appropriate slot and then connected to the system with power and S-ATA cables.
However, other users experience a big surprise when they buy a new SSD. One recently found valuable data on a new
