A player has bought a used RTX 3050. From the outside, the graphics card looks quite burnt. However, it still works.
Graphics cards are one of the most important components in a gaming PC, but they have become very expensive in recent years. A player probably wanted to save money and bought a used graphics card. On reddit, he posted a picture of an RTX 3050 that looks quite worn: The graphics card is heavily discolored at the edge and looks as if it has severe burn marks.
Is the graphics card still working? The buyer himself explains in an update that he tested the graphics card and it works flawlessly. However, he does not explain what happened to the GPU. He only states, “I just got this (RTX) 3050 and I believe someone BBQ’d on this grill.”
Many users can only speculate about what really happened to the graphics card:
- Some speculate that the graphics card survived a house fire.
- Others speculate that there must have been heavy smokers in the household, which is why the graphics card is so heavily discolored.
- A third group explains that this is a typical discoloration for the “oven method”: Here, graphics cards are baked in the oven to make them functional again.
Used hardware is always a risk, but it can be worth it
Is buying a used graphics card even worth it? Basically, it always depends on how well the owner has taken care of it: Depending on the condition and experience of the seller, you can find real bargains on the used market. Especially when sellers are unaware, you can get fantastic graphics cards for little money.
Many used GPUs on websites like Amazon or eBay still have a lot of performance left in them and can even be better than brand new models. Sometimes owners have only used their hardware for a few months or have switched from their PC back to a gaming console.
And used graphics cards don’t always have to be outdated models. You can also often find modern models from the last generation (RTX 3000 and RX 6000 series) very cheaply nowadays. However, you may have to forgo some new features that are exclusive to the latest models.
