The Anime Gachiakuta is one of the big highlights of the current season. The series almost didn’t exist if the author had treated her belongings better.
How did Gachiakuta come about? The anime is about appreciating your used items even when they are no longer brand new. Through this appreciation, the items become what are called Jinkis. They then gain special powers that can be used for battle or other situations.
This idea only exists because a terrible thing happened to the author Kei Urana. She lost a beloved item which she destroyed in a fit of rage. It is about a pen, as she revealed in an interview with Pika édition (seen on X):
Once, I broke a pen that I valued very much in a fit of rage, and I cried a lot back then because I was very attached to it. From that moment on, I thought about exploring “values, objects, and broken things,” and thus Gachiakuta was born…
This love for her pen can even be seen in the first image of her manga: There is a human hand holding a pen with a nib. In the foreground, there are text boxes talking about souls within objects that are appreciated.
Gachiakuta revolves around valuable trash
How does this manifest in the anime? In Gachiakuta, trash is a central theme. Regardless of social class, people treat their belongings as worthless trash.
- In the upper class, stuffed animals or other objects that only have minor signs of use are directly replaced with new ones.
- These items end up in the slums, but are often passed on as trash that then ends up in the abyss. There, these negative feelings create the trash monsters.
- People who treat an item particularly well and form an emotional bond with it gain special powers.
In the case of Rudo, the main character of Gachiakuta, it is the gloves of his guardian that he values particularly highly. This gives him the power to turn other items into Jinkis and use them in battle.
This can manifest, for example, in a chain suddenly getting bigger and having more impact.
