AI is highly controversial. Gabe Newell, head of Valve, states that AI can make better developers out of many people. In fact, better developers than those who have been doing nothing else for a decade.
The YouTuber Zalkar Saliev spoke in an interview with Gabe Newell, founder and head of Valve (Steam). During this discussion, they touched on a topic that concerns many people today: artificial intelligence and its use in everyday life (via YouTube.com).
What did Saliev want to know? The YouTuber wanted to ask Newell whether younger people dealing with AI should learn the technical side or focus solely on the best ways to use the tools. This was reported by the English-speaking magazine PCGamer.com.
Newell considers AI an important tool in everyday life
This was Newell’s response: The head of Valve (Steam) explained that he considers both aspects important. He stated that people who actively work with AI will surpass those who have been programming for years in the future:
I believe it’s both. The more you understand what underlies these current tools, the more effectively you can use them. However, I think we find ourselves in a funny situation where people who cannot program and use AI to improve their programming skills will become more effective developers than those who have been doing it for a decade.
Newell further emphasizes that every user should be able to derive something useful from AI. However, to truly get the best out of this technology, one must understand how it works and what is behind it. Newell adds:
Even if you are just a pure tool user, you will find that the benefit of these tools is very, very high. But your ability to use these tools will continue to improve the more you understand the underlying methods and mindsets of the people developing machine learning systems. So I believe that both are interrelated and greatly complement each other.
In the same interview, Saliev spoke with Newell about his daily routine. Newell mentions that he works every day of the week but enjoys his work, which makes it feel like retirement to him: Gabe Newell tells a YouTuber with 19 subscribers how the head of Valve lives and works on a boat 7 days a week
