PUBG – The Game for Realism Fans
What is PUBG? PUBG stands for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The game started the entire battle royale hype in 2017. It is developed by the Korean company Bluehole, who are also behind the MMORPGs TERA and A:IR.
For their battle royale game, they got the “creator” of the genre on board, who is Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene, who had already created the famous BR mods for ARMA.
On which platforms does PUBG run? Currently, PUBG is only available for PC and Xbox One. A separate mobile version is available on iOS and Android but is not compatible with the main game. It looks like a PS4 version is also on the way.
Highlights and Items
What makes PUBG special? PUBG visibly retains the connection to Brendan Greene’s old ARMA mods. The game strongly emphasizes realism, making it crucial for you to act tactically. As is typical for the genre, the time-to-kill is very low, and you’re dead immediately if you’re not careful. There are also no special powers or unrealistic items.
How does the item system work? PUBG has a complex item management system. Without a backpack, you can carry very few items. Different backpacks greatly increase your carrying capacity. A level 3 backpack allows you to carry a decent supply of gear.
Items include various firearms based on real guns, melee weapons like the famous frying pan, and grenades. You can heal yourself with bandages and medkits.
Gameplay and Maps
How do the fights play out? PUBG plays more tactically and is less dynamic compared to Fortnite or Black Ops. If you get into a firefight, you should have a good plan and optimal weapons; otherwise, you’ll be quickly dispatched.
Simply running around shooting blindly in PUBG will quickly get you killed. Good timing and tactics dictate who wins here.
How many maps are there? PUBG currently has three different maps:
- Erangel is the classic map in Eastern Bloc style
- On Miramar, mountains and open fields dominate the gameplay
- Sanhok is a slightly smaller tropical map that promises more action
Game Modes and Costs
Are there alternative game modes? PUBG focuses on classic solo, duo, and team matches. There are also modes with respawns or larger teams, as well as a training mode.
You also have the choice between 3rd and 1st person view.
What does PUBG cost? As a buy-to-play game, you need to pay around 30 euros for PUBG. However, there are still microtransactions and a battle pass, in which you unlock further cosmetic items.
Who should play PUBG?
Who is PUBG ideal for? PUBG is aimed at military shooter purists who want no gimmicks in their game. Here, tactical gameplay is essential. Additionally, there are only “real” weapons and no colorful fantasy guns.
The graphic style is understated and not overly colorful or quirky. However, the recently introduced event pass also included some quirky outfits and emotes to unlock.
