In Fortnite, the silly dances and somewhat childish emotes are part of everyday life – similar to the many colorful skins and collaborations. However, Epic Games has now released an update that affects whether your opponents can actually see your mocking emotes.
What is this new setting? In Fortnite, there has been a new setting called “Show Confrontational Emotes” since April 22, 2024.
With this new setting, you can decide for yourself whether you want to see certain emotes. Only emotes that can be used confrontationally are affected. This means: emotes that allow you to humiliate defeated opponents, i.e., make fun of them.
If you activate the setting, a player performing one of the affected emotes will simply stand still. No movement will be executed, and no emote sound will be played.
By default, the new setting is configured so that you can only see these emotes from friends in your group. However, you can also choose to see these emotes from all players or decide not to see them at all.
How is the setting activated? You can find the option to turn off confrontational emotes in the settings under “Account and Privacy” and then under “Social Privacy”. It is called “Show Confrontational Emotes”.
Then you select between “from everyone”, “from friends in the group”, and “never”.
New setting affects 4 emotes – including an OG
Which emotes are affected? So far, only four emotes are affected by the new setting:
- Fully Laughing – your character bends over with laughter. The laugh is loud and sounds like a donkey.
- Defeats Happen – You dance silly and show your opponent an “L” (L=Loser) with your fingers on your forehead.
- Whip Crack – You perform a whip strike, complete with matching sound.
- Peel Rain – You let banana peels “rain” from your hands, with the motion resembling the distribution of banknotes.
If an opponent you just defeated uses the new setting, you can no longer humiliate them with these four emotes.
How is the community reacting? Mixed. Of course, there are players who find it a shame not to be able to mock their superiority anymore and say that Epic is getting soft. However, other players are glad that they no longer have to hear the donkey laugh of “Fully Laughing”.
Some players also wonder what Epic Games expected emotes like “Fully Laughing” and “Defeats Happen” would be used for.
- Toastyyy_ via Reddit: “It’s Epic, they’re getting soft. First, they removed weapons from loading screens. Then they restrict the age for cosmetics. Now they are removing emotes because they are toxic.”
- NotACaveiraMain via Reddit: “I’m just going to teabag and shoot into the ground, like in the good old days.”
- Cerealforsupper via Reddit: “What did they expect people would do with Fully Laughing?”
- iningSchildkröte95 via Reddit: “I just hate Fully Laughing. I’m tired of seeing it and hearing the noise.”
“Defeats Happen” is a real OG emote in Fortnite and has been in the game since February 2018. The emote debuted with the Season 3 Battle Pass, which you could buy for 950 V-Bucks. That’s approximately 8.54 €, as a new tool from the Sparkasse easily calculates for us:
