On New Year’s Eve 2018, Tyler Ninja
Blevins had reached the peak of his fame as a Fortnite streamer on Twitch, but that was when he also experienced the ultimate embarrassment. He invited a million-people audience at Time Square in New York to dance the Fortnite dance “Floss” with him. A terrible failure. 5 years later, he can laugh about it.
What was the situation back then?
- The streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins was on a roll in 2018: He had gone from a relatively unknown Halo player to the most famous gamer in the world overnight. Blevins had earned millions of dollars, was featured on talk shows, and was on the cover of sports magazines.
- Fortnite was so big in 2018 that they had Ninja stream from Time Square in New York, where thousands of people traditionally celebrate the turn of the year.
- But at the very moment of his greatest triumph, Ninja experienced a legendary embarrassment.
The crowd left the streamer hanging
That was the embarrassing moment: Supposedly spurred on by his team, Ninja urged the audience to do the Fortnite dance “Floss” in pouring rain and danced it himself frantically.
But no matter where you looked in the crowd, people were not thinking about dancing; they ignored Ninja. Apparently, they were not there for him at all.
The camera tried to find at least a few people in the audience who participated. But in the background of every dancer, you could see dozens ignoring it completely.
In his despair, Ninja turned directly to the audience and spoke the fateful sentence: “I’m not seeing enough movement” – no one was moving.
Why was that so embarrassing? This scene is seen as a sign of absolute overconfidence, where someone considers themselves much more important than they actually are and believes that people are only there because of them.
Ninja has since been constantly teased by friends and foes about this incident.
This is how he sees it now: Apparently, Ninja can laugh wonderfully about the situation in 2023. Currently, he is back in the limelight with “Fortnite OG” and he posts a video of himself on Twitter where he looks delighted and surprised and groans contentedly.
He writes: This is what someone looks like when people are dancing along, while he shares the hashtag: “NinjaNotEnougMovement.”
This is an example of how to cope relatively healthily with really bad moments.
