Fortnite: Battle Royale is planning another collaboration and this time it’s about ridiculously expensive sports cars. Hence, a stylish Ferrari is coming into the game, which hardly any player can afford.
What car is coming into the game? In a teaser on Twitter, the car manufacturer Ferrari recently posted a snippet of a red sports car with the Ferrari logo. In the paint, the reflection of a typical battle bus can be seen, sailing into another round of cheerful battle royale.
The new Ferrari 296GTB has been developed to enhance the joy of driving. And starting tomorrow, it will also enhance the ‘fun of playing’ in Fortnite.
Apparently, the new sports car from Ferrari is actually set to appear in the game as a vehicle.
Marketing campaign without a real target audience?
This is what’s strange about the campaign: Collaborations with big companies are nothing new in Fortnite, as there have been various campaigns with Disney, where characters and content from the Avengers or Star Wars came into the game. Likewise, the Netflix series Stranger Things contributed a few characters in the past. And the toy manufacturer Hasbro offered real-life replicas of popular Fortnite guns as Nerf guns.
However, all these collaborations had the background that the target audience of Fortnite, namely young and teenage gamers, has a significant overlap with fans of pop culture series and Nerf guns. Anyone who plays Fortnite might be persuaded by such crossover events to buy a ticket for the next Marvel movie, a Nerf blaster, or a Netflix subscription.
However, the overlap between Fortnite gamers and Ferrari drivers should be rather small given the extreme prices that such vehicles usually achieve. The new Ferrari 296GTB costs approximately 270,000 euros. Besides famous streamers like Ninja, DrDisrespect, or Tfue, hardly any player can afford such a budget.
The average Fortnite gamer certainly will not rush to the nearest Ferrari dealer after gaming to treat themselves to such a horsepower machine.
This is how the community reacts: Indeed, Ferrari’s tweet was received with mixed feelings. Some players rub their eyes in disbelief and say, ‘Why?’ or ‘WTF?’.
Others are happy that they can at least drive the car in the game that they can never afford or aren’t allowed to.
As user Tabor Hill writes via Twitter: ‘My wife won’t let me drive fast sports cars, so my only chance will be to drive one in Fortnite.’
On the other hand, there are also other ways to drive fast sports cars in virtual spaces. Namely in racing games like the Forza series. There, you can immediately start with your dream car without having to fend off aggressive players who might shoot your dream car from under you.
