Fortnite allows you to embark on a journey with companions starting November 1, 2025, who are especially well-received by players due to their cute appearance. However, when they read about the conditions tied to changing this appearance, they can hardly believe what Epic demands in return.
What kind of companions are these? In a current announcement on fortnite.com, the team introduced a variety of companions that can accompany players in many game modes. These include a banana-dog named Schälchen, which can be unlocked starting November 1 in the next Battle Pass, as well as additional companions named Wuffel, Spike, and Mini-Raptor, who will appear in the shop starting November 7. Epic also promises that, in addition to all the dogs, there will be a suitable companion for cat fans.
The cute little creatures are very popular with the community, mainly due to their cuteness, but the joy over the new companions is dampened by a certain condition. While you can customize the companions’ appearance, you can only do so if you are willing to buy a companion multiple times over – and every time at the same price.
Players can hardly believe that Epic isn’t ashamed
What shocks players? Anyone wanting to give their furry friend in Fortnite a new look cannot simply apply a new skin. If the companion is to have a new appearance, players have no choice but to purchase a completely “new” companion, even if they already own it. Epic sees this as less problematic, mentioning it quite consciously in the second paragraph of the announcement:
You can customize the appearance of most companions once in the locker after you have received them. Your selection is permanent, so take a good look at the appearance preview before making your final decision.

When this information was shared with the community on Reddit, players could hardly believe that this decision could actually be real in Fortnite: “Dude, I have to buy multiple companions so they can wear different shirts? Are you serious?” (Xeallexx on Reddit).
What do fans say about the monetization of customization options? The Fortnite community on Reddit seems almost twice as perplexed, as such a regulation for a game with such a variety of customization options like Fortnite is hard to explain.
“Epic … why are there cosmetic options for companions when you force them to be permanent?” writes the stunned user CosmicAtlas8 on Reddit, “We have 200 equipment slots and thousands of skins because your players love to customize things visually. Please consider updating the customization options so they are not one-time and permanent.”
The user Absolute_Eb’s presumed response – refined with a touch of irony that summarizes the general mood of the players according to responses – is as follows: “As mentioned, you can only customize them once, but you can buy multiple copies […] and provide a small, struggling company like Epic with more financial support” (Source: Reddit).
