To ensure your characters in Final Fantasy XIV always look stylish, the developers introduced the projection system, also known as Glamour. Here you will learn how to unlock it and how it works.
What is Glamour? Glamour, or projections, refers to the common WoW term transmog in FFXIV. You can give your equipment the appearance of other outfits, provided the necessary conditions are met.
Generally, Glamour in FFXIV is considered “the true endgame.” Fans of the MMORPG spend countless hours combining their outfits to find the perfect look for all occasions. The developers provide them with new equipment and various tools in updates.
How do I unlock the function? The Glamour function must first be unlocked through a short quest before use. You can find the quest here:
- Location: Western Thanalan (X: 12.6 / Y: 14.3). Not far from the entrance to the Sunwind.
- Quest Name: Beautiful Illusion
- NPC: Swyrgeim

This allows you to change the appearance of your equipment using projection prisms. You need to ensure that you meet all the conditions for a projection:
- You must have at least one prism in your inventory
- The respective items must be in your possession
- The two items must be of the same type: Pants will always only be projected onto another pair of pants, a hat onto another hat, etc.
- The item level of the base item must be equal to or higher: You cannot project an item with item level 600 onto one that only has item level 240.
- Both items must be usable by the same job: You cannot project a Paladin’s equipment onto a Bard.
- Both items must be usable by the same race and gender: You cannot project equipment that can only be worn by female Miqo’te onto male Au Ra.
To project the desired item onto another, you need to right-click to open the projection menu and select the correct equipment:

What are projection prisms? The prisms are a tool you need to change the appearance of your equipment. One prism is automatically consumed per projection. If you have no more prisms in your inventory, a projection is not possible.
You can obtain them from the following sources:
- Crafting
- Exchanging for coins at your local State Company
- Buying at the Market Board
The Projection Wardrobe and the Projection Plates
What is it? You can find the projection wardrobe in the inns of the three starting cities and in Kugane. It serves two different purposes: On one hand, it provides additional inventory space for your equipment. You can store up to 800 different armor pieces there, from weapons to gloves and pants to earrings.
The inventory space has been expanded several times in the past, so it is quite possible that the wardrobe will be enlarged again in the future.

Here you can store equipment from your Arsenal or inventory in the wardrobe, sort it by jobs, and most importantly, combine different outfits and save them on projection plates.
What are projection plates? The plates give you the opportunity to be creative with your outfit combinations. You can assign individual parts to a plate and “lock” them, so that in the end you have a selection of various custom outfits.
The same rules apply as mentioned above for “normal” projections. This means that you cannot layer two equipment items from different jobs over one another, must possess projection prisms, and so on.
The dropdown menu on the right allows you to sort your collection by individual jobs to make searching easier. Only the items that the respective job can equip or those that can be worn by all jobs will be displayed.
Currently, you can save up to 20 different sets, but it is also possible that this number will increase in the future.
If you are satisfied with your creation, you can save it and use it with the push of a button. However, this is only possible if you are in a city.
Projection Plates and Armor Sets
Here’s how you can connect them: Not every piece of armor in FFXIV is exclusive to one job. Different job roles like healers, tanks, or mages often share individual armor sets among themselves. If you want different projections for the same set, for example, on your White Mage and Astrologian, you can achieve this by linking them.
To do this, go to your equipment sets list in the character menu and right-click on the desired equipment set to open a submenu.

This will open an overview of your projection plates where you can select the plate you want to assign to the respective equipment set.
Once the two are linked, the projection will always be executed automatically when you equip the respective set. Of course, this can only be done if you are in a city, as projections cannot be performed outside of that. You can change or unlink this connection as desired.
