The European servers for the fantasy MMO Final Fantasy XIV are currently still in Montreal, Canada. That might change very soon.
In the aftermath of Gamescom, more and more scattered information about various games is gradually emerging. Magazines from all over the world had extensive discussions in Cologne, and occasionally there is still a hidden gem that is revealed a bit late. This is also the case here.
As Naoki Yoshida, the producer behind Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, said in an interview with a French site on the sidelines of Gamescom, European players might soon look forward to servers closer to home. When asked if FF XIV would follow the example of The Elder Scrolls Online—after all, European players of FF XIV were also demanding a move just as those of The Elder Scrolls Online had—Yoshida replied, “I have good news for your readers.”
They are currently in the cost analysis phase for moving the EU servers to Europe. At the moment, Final Fantasy XIV is consulting with all parties involved in such a decision.
