The Colombian football player Alejandro Penaranda tragically passed away on June 1. In FIFA 18 Ultimate Team, some players are trying to profit from it.
The “trading”, or trading, with FUT cards is nothing special in FIFA. It is a legitimate and effective way to earn in-game currency.
However, it becomes macabre, when a football player meets his death and FIFA players try to collect coins with his card.

What happened? On June 1, the 24-year-old Colombian Alejandro Penaranda died in a robbery. In FIFA Ultimate Team, he has a bronze card with a rating of 57.
EA expressed condolences. EA responded on June 11: They removed his card from sets and lowered its price range, so the maximum sale value, to 1000 coins. The latter is meant to prevent players from hoarding his card and selling it for a high price. Because if it can no longer be drawn from packs, the supply decreases and the price would rise.
Players tried to profit. Even if trading with Alejandro Penaranda’s card was restricted, the greed of a part of the FIFA community became evident in other ways. The card of Adalberto Panaranda, a player with a similar name, rapidly rose in price since EA’s announcement. Apparently, some players just entered the last name and thus confused the two cards.
It’s not the first time. Similar situations have been abundant when footballers passed away. This behavior was last observed at the death of Davide Astori. He passed away on March 4, 2018.
How exactly does trading work with cards removed from the game?
If a FUT card is removed from the game, it can no longer be drawn from sets. This can happen, for example, due to a transfer to a league whose rights EA does not own, or due to a death.
Since the card does not receive any “replenishment”, the supply decreases while demand remains the same or even increases. Additionally, cards are removed from the game through “Squad Building Challenges,” leading to even less supply.
If you’re quick, you can bid on the card shortly after the announcement of the transfer or the death at a low price. Once the price goes up, it can be sold for a higher price.
EA is now trying to put a stop to this at the time of deaths. However, as the reaction is slow, EA still fails to completely prevent trading with the deceased.
