The trivela shot in FIFA 23 is a pain point for many players. This special shooting technique is currently extremely strong in high leagues, and the goalkeeper often performs quite clumsily when attempting to defend. Since the release, a fix has been requested, but now it’s heating up again on reddit.
Update November 15: EA has indeed announced a patch that will address the issue. Shots with the outside of the foot will have a 30% lower accuracy in the future. Exception: If the player has the relevant outside foot skill. Then the accuracy will only be reduced by 10%.

What kind of shot is this? The outside foot shot – also known as the trivela shot – is one of the new shooting techniques introduced with FIFA 23. It is technically a bit more challenging than the “normal” shot with the inside of the foot. The Portuguese Ricardo Quaresma was feared and admired for his trivela shots in real life.
The execution of the shot is actually quite simple. Just press:
- L2 and Circle (shoot button) on the PS controller
- LT and B (shoot button) on the Xbox controller
- Additionally, you need to charge the shot to at least three bars
The difficult part is the right positioning. Ideally, you stand with a right foot on the right edge of the penalty area or with a left foot on the left edge of the penalty area. Now you shoot the ball into the far corner with the outside of your foot.
This shot looks not only good but is also incredibly effective. Too effective, according to the players. Even players with a shot power of 49 can easily score from outside the penalty area.

What are the players complaining about? On reddit, a thread was opened discussing the shot and demanding a fix. The creator complains that the trivela shot scores for him in 9 out of 10 cases, even from somewhat crazy distances.
This feeling is confirmed by many users in the thread:
- Jamesv93 writes: “It is completely broken and needs to be nerfed. I have noticed the shots especially on corners. People take a short corner, pass to the edge of the box, and just take a trivela shot as quickly as they can.”
- Lejhonny complains: “When a defender with 60 shot power scores like that, you know it’s broken.”
- Dylan Banks also provides a vivid example in his video. He scores with a player with 49 shot power. He states: “If you are at the right angle and hit the three bars, the ball goes in 80 or 90 percent of the time.”
The thread has gathered 160 upvotes and 80 comments within four hours. Currently, it is ranked 2nd in the FIFA subreddit. However, not all users are against the shot in general. It is said to be defendable due to the obvious positioning, but only with players outside of the goal.
What exactly is the problem? According to reddit users, the goalkeeper is mainly the big problem. He apparently behaves particularly dumb during trivela shots.
Often he jumps under the ball, even though it sometimes comes in at chest height. Furthermore, he sometimes jumps forward at the ball, even though the outside foot shot is supposed to go into the top corner.
labo_ explains the success of the shot as follows: “Goalkeepers cannot react and defenders cannot react. That is why players in higher divisions always use it. With shots using the outside of the foot, the goalkeeper simply forgets to parry. And the outside foot shot appears as if it had 100% accuracy without randomness. Maybe it’s the animation, I don’t know, but it’s unacceptable how OP L2 modifiers currently are.”

Is a nerf coming? So far, EA has not commented on the shot. However, just last week there was a nerf of a popular technique with corners that was also considered too strong. So it’s possible that adjustments will be made here, even though players have been complaining about the trivela shot since the release.
