In Diablo 4 there is currently food for discussion regarding the trading of items. A player attempted to trade his gold for an item, but before he knew it, the item he wanted had vanished before his eyes. Now he warns other players about the same fate.
How did the scam work? The user Sp3rMi recounts his experience regarding the scam on Reddit. He met a Chinese player for trading and wanted to trade a 4GA Kepeleke staff for 15 billion gold. The deal was made and the players went their separate ways.
However, 10 seconds later, the staff vanished without a trace from the Reddit user’s inventory. The item was gone, as was the 15 billion gold. Now the player warns other fans on Reddit about this scam and labels it as “trade hacking”. Even though it looked like a dubious practice, there is an interesting system from Blizzard behind it, which is supposed to protect the market of the current season.
The system also exists in Diablo 2
What kind of system is this? The procedure referred to as “trade hacking” is actually a system to protect the market in Diablo. Even in Diablo 2, there were players who liked to duplicate powerful items to sell them for much gold more frequently. Blizzard saw this as a problem and therefore came up with a solution.
The solution to the problem, as explained by user Albinator_ on Reddit, was to assign an ID to every unique item. When attempting to duplicate this item, the system recognized it as a duplicate and caused the item to disappear in trades or when dropped. This way, the scammer theoretically cannot make a profit from it.
In Sp3rMi’s case, this went poorly, as the system could not intervene quickly to protect the victim. Now he is left with a loss and accordingly has no hope of seeing the item or his gold again.
How can I see through such a scam? To prevent the same from happening to you, players on Reddit advise dropping the item to be traded for some time to see if it vanishes into thin air.
If it does, you have recognized the scam; if not, you can trade without worries. In this case, do not let yourself be rushed into a quick trade and take your time. If you act too hastily, you might be the next victim left with the costs.
