Fans of Blade have been waiting for years for a proper new movie. An upcoming series showcases the antihero in action once again, and might help ease the wait for his next theater appearance.
His real name is Eric Brooks, but most probably know him by his much cooler name Blade. The antihero, who is a mix of human and vampire, has been hunting vampires since his first appearance in 1973. He is driven by his thirst for revenge, as a vampire named Deacon Frost bit Blade’s mother, leading to her death.
The character has had three solo films: Blade, Blade II, and the not-so-good Blade: Trinity. He was portrayed by Wesley Snipes, who created a comic book film icon. Blade: Trinity is already 21 years ago; the film was released in 2004.
Since then, fans have mostly been pacified: Although there was a series in 2006 called Blade: The Series, it only lasted one season. In 2012, an anime series was released, which also only had 12 episodes. There were some smaller appearances and cameos, such as in Deadpool & Wolverine, where Blade was again played by Wesley Snipes.
Most fans of the character are placing great hope in the next solo film, which was announced by Marvel in 2019. Unfortunately, the film is stuck in production hell. This means that the work on the screenplay and the film has been repeatedly delayed. The new Blade was supposed to be released in November 2023.
Marvel chief Kevin Feige recently announced to Variety that the film is still planned and that main actor Mahershala Ali is still on board. However, the project is not yet as good in quality as one would like. Similar difficulties during production were encountered with Blade: Trinity
Now, however, Marvel has introduced a new series in which Blade is once again featured. Even in the trailer, there are some pretty cool and brutal actions to see, but the first images might equally please and disappoint fans:
Bloody Zombie Action in the MCU
What kind of series is this? Marvel Zombies is a new series, but it is animated and features numerous familiar faces from the MCU. In addition to Blade, Wanda, Spider-Man, and Red Guardian appear, most of whom are voiced by the actors from the current live-action films.
The series is based on the comic series of the same name and places the world in an alternative timeline. Here, the zombie apocalypse has broken out, and most beings have been turned into zombies – even the Avengers. A group of survivors is tackling the problem, quickly dealing with the undead.
How large Blade’s actual role will be remains unclear. However, he is prominently showcased in the trailer. Interestingly, the character is not voiced by Mahershala Ali, as some may have hoped. Instead, Todd Williams takes on this job, having voiced several characters from the Marvel Universe – such as Rick Mason in the game Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
The fact that the new series offers a completely animated Blade might also disappoint some fans. However, they do get more stylish action with the character. Even the first scenes show that the series is definitely aimed at adults and does not shy away from bloody scenes.
The first season of Marvel Zombies premieres on September 24, 2025, and will contain four episodes. It will be available on Disney+.
