The first season of the Fallout series was a great success. As the showrunners have now revealed, the successful execution of the filming was primarily thanks to climate change.
How did the Fallout series fare? Amazon’s series adaptation of the eponymous video game by Bethesda was a huge success. Both critics and viewers celebrated the series as a successful adaptation, and it also convinced our MeinMMO author Christoph Waldboth.
It was only a matter of time before the second season would be announced. That has now happened, and the showrunners shared a little behind the scenes in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Especially noteworthy: they mentioned that the filming of the first season was associated with a significant risk. And how climate change helped to eliminate potential problems.
Fortunate in Misfortune: The Snow Was Missing
What do the showrunners say? The first season of the series was filmed in the state of New York. The filming lasted just over half a year, from July 2022 to February 2023.
The wasteland in the series is characterized by barren landscapes that often resemble deserts. It is hot and dry, just like in California, where the series is set. However, filming took place on the other side of the USA. This was risky, as the East Coast and New York are known for their icy winters and snowstorms.
As Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner now shared, there were no problems due to too much snow. On the contrary: climate change ensured that the filming locations were free of ice and snow even in winter.
“Yes, global warming saved us,” summarizes Robertson-Dworet. This must have been a relief for the showrunners, but overall, it is indeed concerning that climate change is already causing such changes.
Aside from that, the second season will also have a new filming location.
Where will filming take place from now on? The production is moving from New York to California. This is primarily due to a tax credit of 25 million US dollars that the California Film Commission is granting to the series. This way, production costs can be reduced.
According to the showrunners, California is generally better suited. Many employees live there, and the climate fits better with Fallout. However, the first part of the filming will take place abroad – in Canadian Toronto.
How and whether the effects of climate change will influence the work this time remains to be seen. It is certain that filming is scheduled to begin in September 2024. There is still no release date. Anyone hoping for a series set in the Elder Scrolls universe after Fallout will have to wait – as the Bethesda chief has bad news.
