In Fallout 76, Patch 9 is currently being rolled out on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The update brings long-awaited changes to the game. We show you the highlights.
This patch is about: Today, on May 7th, Fallout 76 went into maintenance mode at around 4 PM. Since then, the new Patch 9 has been applied, bringing a new quest line into the game.
How long will the maintenance last? The maintenance work is complete. You can log in and play.
How big is the patch? The size of the patch differs on consoles and PC:
- On PC, the patch will be approximately 3.5 GB
- The console version is 8 GB in size

New Quest Line – Always Upward: In this quest line, you can follow in the footsteps of the scouting pioneers and solve new tasks. To do so, you need to read special posters at train stations in Appalachia to become members of the Tadpole Order. The posters are also available for free in the Atom Shop for a little while.
Once you are a member of the order, you can participate in various mini-quests and earn badges that you can exchange for loot.
After completing the quest line, you will receive your first backpack. To do this, you need to be promoted to the rank of Opossum. Backpacks are also a new feature in Patch 9.
These are the backpacks from Patch 9: These backpacks were teased in advance and provide you with greater carrying capacities. You can thus expand your inventory.
In addition to the backpacks, there are also special mods that you can apply for them. For example, you can turn your backpack into a refrigerator so you can keep your food cool and make it last longer.
Finally, player vending machines are coming: Players have been waiting a long time for this innovation! With Patch 9, vending machines are coming into the game, where you can sell your items to other players.
You can place up to 4 of these machines in your C.A.M.P. and turn your unused items into caps. You can assign 30 items per machine and make a good profit.
Overall, you will receive 90% of the sale price. The remaining 10% goes to the economy system. These shops were so highly anticipated, that players briefly introduced them to the game themselves.
Legendary exchange machines are coming into the game: In addition to the vending machines, legendary exchange machines are also coming into the game. There you can exchange unused legendary items for a new currency: Legendary Tokens.
With these tokens, you can buy other legendary items from a new “Legendary Merchant”. However, this merchant is not yet in the game and will not arrive in Fallout 76 until May 16. But you can already save some tokens for that.
