Fallout 76 is planning a free trial event where players can play for free for a limited time. This coincides with several other events, giving new players plenty to do.
When does the event take place? In the latest “Out of the Vault”, Bethesda announced that from Thursday, December 12 at 5:00 PM CET to Monday, December 16 at 6:00 PM CET, Fallout 76 will be playable for free.
Players on PS4 or Xbox One will need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold.
You can play the entire base game during this period. This includes both the Adventure Mode and the Battle Royale “Nuclear Winter”. If you wish, you can purchase the game at a 50% discount during this time. Progress made during the trial will carry over.
What’s included in the event
Here’s how you can level up faster: Along with the free trial, Fallout 76 will also have a double XP event. At the exact same time, you will receive double experience for all explorations, quests, or Nuclear Winter matches.
There are gifts! Also starting on December 12, a Christmas event will begin. During this event, you will find “Holiday-Fried” dressed in Christmas costumes throughout Appalachia.
Fried are the main antagonists of the game, and in the holiday variant, you have the chance to receive gifts. If you defeat one of these special enemies, it may drop a gift with various rewards, such as:
- Coal
- Rare plans and recipes
- Wrapping paper, so you can wrap gifts yourself
This event, however, lasts 10 days longer, ending on December 26. If you want to continue playing after the trial, you can keep hunting Fried.
Halloween event in Nuclear Winter: From December 12 to December 17, at 1 AM, the Halloween event returns in the Battle Royale mode Nuclear Winter under the name “Pre-Christmas Nightmare”.
During this time, you have the opportunity to earn rewards by completing special challenges in Nuclear Winter. There are, for example:
- Pumpkin paint jobs for armor
- Special weapon skins
- A skeleton costume that glows in the dark
The Halloween event transitions into the Christmas event on December 18, but there are still no details on the rewards.

What does Update 16 bring?
What’s in the patch: Just before the free trial event, the new Update 16 will hit the servers on Tuesday, December 10. There has already been a sneak peek of the features that await you:
- The maps “Forest” and “Morgantown” are returning to Nuclear Winter
- Before each Nuclear Winter match, you can vote on which map will be played
- Private worlds can now be set to “team only,” so friends can no longer join freely
- Santa-tron as C.A.M.P. decoration will be temporarily available for free in the shop – he can provide you with sweets or gifts he collects
However, new content from the anticipated “Wastelanders” update is not coming yet. With some new screenshots of Wastelanders, you can already get a taste of what’s coming.
But you’ll have to wait until 2020 for the update and new content:
