Although there are no humans in Fallout 76 except for the players, you can join various factions. Our guide summarizes where to find them and what you need to do.
That factions will also play a role in Fallout 76 was hinted at by Bethesda even before the release. They introduced several NPCs who are already dead in the game.
These NPCs belong to factions that you can also join in Fallout 76. We explain in this guide how to find them.
The Responders
The Responders are one of the new factions and can be found early in the game.
Who are the Responders? The faction is a coalition of volunteers. The founding members mainly come from the fire department, police, and medical support staff. During the war, they founded the Responders to help civilians in an organized manner and train them in survival skills.
The Responders ensure that there is a Robotron merchant and resources for those in need at all train stations. However, not much remains of them.
How to find the Responders: This faction is almost unavoidable. If you follow the introductory quests, you will automatically end up in the small town of Flatwoods. In a church, you will find the Responders’ terminal.
To join the Responders, you need to volunteer. For this, you must complete a series of smaller tasks. They are part of the main story of Fallout 76. The associated quests will lead you to other locations in Appalachia.
The Firebugs
Essentially, the Firebugs are a special unit of the Responders.
Who are the Firebugs? This subgroup of the Responders mainly deals with the Scorched. These mutated humans roam all over Appalachia. Firebugs underwent special training during their education.
How to find the Firebugs: Their headquarters is located in the Charleston Fire Department building. There you can begin the training for recruitment.
The Raiders
The Raiders are present in all Fallout installments and are one of the factions that cause chaos throughout the wasteland.
Who are the Raiders? They are usually disorganized groups of bandits. They settle in all sorts of hideouts and raid other survivors. In Appalachia, there were five different gangs. However, like the Responders, the Raiders in West Virginia did not survive.
How to find the Raiders: Head to “Top of the World” southeast of Vault 76. There, even a quest awaits you.
The leader of the Raiders, Rose, is a Miss Nanny bot and sends you out, among other things, to build a signal booster for the Raiders. You also need to hunt a Yao Guai in a specific way.
The Brotherhood of Steel
The Brotherhood of Steel is one of the most popular factions in the Fallout universe. Somehow, they made their way to West Virginia as well.
Who is the Brotherhood of Steel? This faction is a kind of advanced knight order in the Fallout universe. In Appalachia, it was led by a former US Army member, Elizabeth Taggerdy. She was chosen by Roger Maxson himself. Maxson is considered the founder of the Brotherhood of Steel.
The branches of the Brotherhood have spread throughout the USA as they could communicate through a satellite. Most members of the Brotherhood come from the military, thus they possess the appropriate technology.
How to find the Brotherhood of Steel: In Appalachia, there are outposts like Camp Venture and the Grafton Dam, where you can complete tasks for the Brotherhood.
However, their headquarters is located at Fort Defiance in Cranberry Bog. That is the southeastern part of Appalachia. There, a former institution awaits to be explored by you.
But be careful, the monsters in the area are a bit too strong for newcomers. You will encounter a Wendigo.
The Enclave
The Enclave has been a staple of the games since Fallout 2 and is one of the most influential factions.
Who is the Enclave? The Enclave is an organization that mainly originated from remnants of the US government and important organizations. It is an extremely brutal faction and hostile to anyone who does not belong to the Enclave.
How to find the Enclave: Your headquarters is located in the Whitespring Bunker. However, it is not immediately accessible. First, you need to find a cave in the east of Appalachia. There, you will face a fight with Deathclaws, so be prepared.
If you manage to get past the Deathclaws, you will find a corpse inside the cave. Now follow the tasks and you will eventually gain access to the Whitespring Bunker.
There, you will meet MODUS, an AI of the Enclave. It will give you instructions on how to join the faction.
The Whitespring Bunker also exists in reality. It is the Greenbrier Resort, which used to belong to the US military. In fact, beneath the hotel complex is a huge nuclear fallout shelter built secretly by former President Eisenhower.
The Free States
This faction is also one of the new groups that only exist in West Virginia.
Who are the Free States? The Free States were founded by US Senator Sam Blackwell and Raleigh Grey. In the years of the war, it was a movement of survivors who increasingly clashed with the law until they eventually broke away from the government.
Some survived the war in self-built bunkers. A few years after the end of the war, they opened their bunkers and took it upon themselves to fight the Scorched. They were not hostile towards other factions but mostly kept to themselves.
How to find the Free States: In the swamp, there are four bunkers that belonged to the Free States. First, head to Abbie’s Bunker in the northeastern corner of the map. There you can start the questline.
The quests are among the harder ones and will have you fighting Deathclaws among other things. So make sure your level is sufficient.
The Order of Mysteries
The Order is a new group that now makes its first appearance in Fallout 76.
What is the Order of Mysteries? It is a group that only women could join. The Order was founded after the war by Shannon and Frederick Rivers. They took in girls who had become orphans. These girls were to become the heroines of Appalachia, based on the Mistress of Mystery.
This character is a kind of superheroine and comes from the same comics as the Silver Shroud, which some players may know from Fallout 4.

Currently, the factions are nothing but remnants, their members have disappeared or died. However, in the future, they could play a bigger role, as Bethesda plans faction-based PvP for upcoming updates.
