Bethesda has released a new patch for Fallout 4. The new update aims to fix some issues with the new Next-Gen update, and even brings new options to the game. However, the developers advise sticking to the defaults. Players have generally responded positively to the changes, but it’s not enough to make up for the frustration.
What’s going on with the update?
- In April, Fallout 4 received the major Next-Gen update, allowing you to finally play at 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The update has been announced for 2 years, so fans have been waiting a long time for it.
- However, there are major problems: Performance has suddenly worsened, and bugs are causing frustration. And, which is probably the worst for a Bethesda game: Mods no longer work.
- Even though fans have waited a long time for the update, they now want to get rid of it by any means necessary. The first fixes are now arriving.
These are the new options: Bethesda has introduced the new patch in a blog post that is supposed to improve the Next-Gen update. The core of the patch consists of new settings options for graphics and performance.
You can now choose between 30, 40, and 60 (default) FPS, as well as between graphical and performance modes (default). However, to use 40 FPS, you need a display that supports 120 Hz.
However, Bethesda recommends not changing the default options: “We recommend using the default settings.” The reason for this is not explained further. In both new modes, the internal resolution is supposed to be adjusted dynamically when there is more happening on the screen.
Additionally, there are several bug fixes and minor adjustments. The update is well received by the community, but something is still missing.
“Expected nothing, still disappointed”
Especially the graphics improvements please the players. In several threads on Reddit, they praise: Especially on PS5, the game looks really good now. With the new patch, Fallout 4 runs faster and smoother, everything looks sharper and more fluid.
Xbox players are happy about the return of Auto-HDR. This option generally improves the game’s visuals. A player with an older PC, who plays Fallout 4 via Game Pass, says: He now has almost 20 FPS more without having to change any settings.
However, players are not entirely satisfied. On the one hand, PC players are disappointed that they essentially receive nothing. Even on high-end machines, they experience fewer FPS than on a console that costs a tenth of the price.
However, worse is that VATS still does not function properly. It still targets through walls or indicates too low hit chances. The aim assist is a popular feature in Fallout, and there are builds that rely solely on this skill. Without VATS, a significant part of the combat system is missing.
