Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Lune holding journal titel title 1280x720

How to play Lune, the powerful mage in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, we will show you through some strong builds.

In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 you have an almost endless selection of options to equip your characters. But so much freedom also carries the potential for feeling overwhelmed and choosing combinations that simply don’t work. Therefore, we want to introduce you to two particularly strong builds for Lune. One for the Early Game and one for the Endgame.

Update, March 26, 2026: The article has been reviewed and is up to date.

Lune Build in Early Game – Lots of Lightning

In the Early Game, the options are still limited, but you can already take a lot from the mage Lune. Note that you don’t necessarily need all components for this build, as it works well even without all Pictos.

Weapon: Deminerim

The weapon Denerim reduces the cost of your lightning abilities by 1 AP from level 4 onwards, allowing you to spam many abilities. Perfect for getting started.

Attributes

Luck and strength, but the scaling of the weapon isn’t that relevant at the beginning of the game. Choose what you like.

Abilities

  • Electrify (Electrify)
  • Wildfire (Wildfire)
  • Immolation (Immolation)
  • Rockslide (Rockslide)
  • Lightning Dance (Lightning Dance)
  • Thunderfall (Thunderfall)

Lumina

The following Pictos are a solid selection. You can swap some as you like if you are missing any. Critical Burn is very important for your damage.

  • Critical Burn (Critical Burn): 25% increased crit chance against burning enemies.
  • Dead Energy II (Dead Energy II): +3 AP when defeating an enemy.
  • Augmented Counter (Augmented Counter): 25% increased damage on counters.
  • Energising Start I (Energising Start I): +1 AP at the start of combat.
  • Energising Start II (Energising Start II): +1 AP at the start of combat.

Combat Guide

At the beginning of combat, apply burning to all enemies, either with Wildfire (for groups) or Immolation (for single targets). Then you can spam Electrify to generate AP and deal damage. Once you have gathered enough AP, simply decide whether to break the opponents with Rockslide or deal extremely high damage directly with Lightning Dance.

This sequence should quickly turn most enemies in the early game into small wood chips.

Devastating Gradient Attacks – Lune in Endgame

The second build is particularly strong in the endgame. You must have already unlocked Gradient attacks and some strong Lumina. Therefore, the build is only helpful in Act 3, but can also work earlier in “New Game+”.

Note that you must have had all conversations with Lune in camp to have her last Gradient attack “Sky Break”. The build comes from YouTuber Fervor Gaming and has proven to be very successful in our tests – indeed so successful that it trivialized many fights.

Weapon: Saperim

Saperim is a weapon with the lightning element but provides powerful bonuses for Gradient attacks. At level 20, your Gradient attacks and Gradient counters deal 50% more damage.

Attributes

Put all points into defense, then into luck, and lastly into strength. Defense and luck scale very strongly with the weapon and increase your attack power more than pure strength.

Abilities

  • Healing Light

This single ability is used to spend AP and generate light pigments. It’s not important that you actually heal a character with it. It’s just about the light pigments that can be generated so easily.

Lumina

The following Pictos are strictly necessary for the build to work. If you are missing any Pictos, the result will be correspondingly weaker:

  • Painted Power (Painted Power): The damage limit of 9,999 is lifted.
  • Cheater (Cheater): You always play 2x in a row.
  • Augmented First Strike (Augmented First Strike): 50% extra damage on the first hit. Once per fight.
  • Greater Powerful (Greater Powerful): Powerful is +15% stronger.
  • Auto Powerful (Auto Powerful): You gain Powerful at the start of the fight.
  • Warming Up (Warming Up): 5% extra damage per turn, stackable up to 5 times.
  • Auto Death (Auto Death): You die at the start of the fight.
  • Survivor (Survivor): You survive lethal damage once per fight with 1 HP.
  • Gradient Fighter (Gradient Fighter): Gradient attacks deal 25% more damage.
  • Glass Canon (Glass Canon): You deal 25% more damage but also take 25% more damage.
  • At Death’s Door (At Death’s Door): You deal 50% more damage when your HP is below 10%.

Lune Gradient Power Luminas

For the build to work, you should also have Verso in the team. Equip him with the ability Phantom Stars (Phantom Stars). Give him all Pictos with “Charging” in the name that offer a bonus to the Gradient meter.

It’s also important to have “Auto Death” and “Breaking Death” as this immediately fills the break meter of enemies and with “Second Chance” Verso will be immediately revived. “Cheater” is also helpful. Verso is primarily used to fill the break and gradient meters.

As your final companion, take Sciel. For Sciel, use the same Pictos as with Verso, but the ability “Fate’s Wrath”. This increases the damage of the selected ally by 100% in their next turn.

Combat Guide

At the start of the battle, Verso and Sciel die automatically. This fills the break meter of all enemies. If it’s Lune’s turn, use Healing Light on allies with her. Once it’s Verso’s turn, make sure he has 9 AP. In his next turn (thanks to Cheater immediately), use “Phantom Stars” to break all enemies and fill a large amount of the Gradient meter.

Then use Sciel’s “Fate’s Wrath” on Lune and in Sciel’s second turn use “Intervention” so that Lune can act immediately.

If everything goes correctly, Lune now has 3 filled Gradient meters and can use “Sky Break”. The attack can deal up to 400,000,000 damage to all enemies, which basically pulverizes every enemy in the game instantly. Even the secret final boss of the game has been defeated more than 8 times with it. Other builds were even too powerful for the developers. Because several billion damage could be dealt with a single ability.
