In Destiny 2 Forsaken, Exotics are rare. Here you can find out how to obtain exotic engrams.
Exotics as a scarce resource: After being flooded with exotic items in year 1 of Destiny 2, Forsaken handles Exotics quite stingily. Numerous Guardians report that they haven’t received a single Exotic even after days in year 2.
This is why Exotics are now so rare: While you can still guarantee Exotics from exotic quests, like from the Pikass, the drop rates for exotic engrams have been significantly reduced. The item “Three of Coins”, which increased the exotic drop chance, is no longer available.
Exotic engrams are now so rare that many Guardians wonder how to even get them.
Sources for exotic engrams in Forsaken
The confirmed sources for possible exotic engrams so far:
- Random drops from any enemies (in open worlds, in the Blind Well, in Lost Sectors, in Strikes, etc.). Usually from enemies with yellow and orange health bars, but also possible from red.
- Weapon Master (when redeeming Weapon Master materials with him and opening the reward)
- Completion of activities, such as heroic adventures, Gambit matches, Crucible matches, etc.
- When ranking up in PvP or Gambit
- When completing loot pursuits
- In chests, like those from high-ranking targets
It seems that nearly all activities and enemies in Destiny 2 can drop exotic engrams – however, the chances are extremely low. Additionally, you cannot influence whether you receive new Forsaken Exotics or old Exotics from year 1.

Can you farm exotic engrams?
Currently, we do not have a farming method. There are individual users who swear that you should activate two fireteam medallions simultaneously before playing activities and especially before receiving powerful gear. This would considerably increase the chances for Exotics. Other users report that they have had medallions active for hours and still have not received any Exotics. Fireteam medallions can be obtained from Tess Everis on page 2 of the inventory for 50 Glimmer.
The best tip seems to be: Play as much as possible. Defeat enemies, master activities – because each time you have a small chance of receiving an engram.
How rare Exotics are can be seen by looking at the trophies of Forsaken. Currently, on September 10th, 0.0% of all PS4 players have collected ten exotic items from Forsaken. So, six days after release, no one on PS4 has managed to collect ten of the new Exotics.

Perhaps the new raid “Last Wish” will be a good source for Exotics. Or future seasonal events. However, the chance of Exotics at the moment is quite low.
By the way: When you pick up exotic engrams from the ground, they are immediately decrypted. You don’t have to run to the Cryptarch first.
