Since the release of Diablo 4, fans have been wondering: Is there actually a secret cow level? It has not yet been found, but the search for it has kept tens of thousands of users occupied for months. Now they are facing a preliminary end, but it looks like it will continue soon.
What is the cow level?
- In Diablo 2, one of the world’s most famous Easter eggs emerged from a silly joke: The cow level, a single level full of cows with a unique boss. In our special, we explain all the backgrounds of the cow level.
- The level is not just a meme but also useful: In Diablo 2, it is the best source for farming specific loot, especially runes.
- Blizzard firmly claims that there is no cow level, but that is of course not true. Even in Diablo 4, there are already initial steps towards the cow level.
What is already known: After months of hard work and active exchanges on Reddit, as well as a Discord created specifically for the cow level hunt, the treasure hunters are currently facing unsolvable puzzles.
The current status of the search for the cow level is:
- If you kill 666 cows, you will receive special items that allow you to interact with the ox shrine in Ked Bardu.
- This will give you a key that opens a secret cave in Scosglen. The location looks like a cow’s head on the map.
- If you kill cows again here, you will receive a stamina potion – actually an item from Diablo 2. Its usefulness in Diablo 4 is currently unknown.
Closely related to the puzzle is apparently the Ring of Misfortune, currently the worst item in the game. You receive it by solving the riddle of the wish fountain in Scosglen.
You need to obtain lucky coins, which you can only get if you find a special world event under the effect of a greed shrine where a demon kills a villager. You can then loot the corpse for the coin.
After that, you need 4 teammates, as every class must be represented once. Each player needs a coin, which you then take turns throwing into the well. A small event follows with fire from the sky, and everyone receives a Ring of Misfortune.

Vessel of Hatred brings new items and secret quests
Here the trail ends for the moment, but more or less confirmed it continues in Vessel of Hatred. The first expansion will be released on October 8 and a first test ran from September 4 to 11.
Here, data miners found five new items that are obviously related to the cow level in the data. Additionally, there seems to be a new item, the “Luckier Coin,” a coin for even more luck. What exactly these items are for is still unknown.
In the “Not Finding A Cow Level” Discord, there are also two new finds. Experts have found clues to quests and some descriptions in the data:
- A secret quest apparently leads even deeper into the cow cave (“Level 2”). How to get there is still unknown, but one user suspects that if a Spiritborn throws a 6th coin into the well, the portal will open.
- There should be a way to travel to the bottom of the wish well through a portal. Allegedly, there is a skeleton there.
- Somewhere in the new content there should also be another ring hidden, the “Ring of the Jinx,” roughly translated: Ring of Hexing or Ring of Pranks. The ring destroys items around you.
The skeleton in the well is particularly interesting because texts have already been found here. The deceased apparently wanted to warn readers and writes that one should not do what he did: hunting “vermin” and something with Nahantu, the new region from Vessel of Hatred.
There is allegedly a moss-covered grave there, but connections to it are still lacking. In the cellar itself, you are supposedly attacked by rats, and the community’s current idea is: “Follow the rats.” This would fit well with the cow level, as Blizzard would pick up a meme again: Player claims he finds legendary items constantly because he follows rats – sparks huge conspiracy
