In the SF-MMO EVE Online, there was a huge fireworks display last week. A player roamed around with 84 PLEX in a hardly protected Rookie ship of the IBIS class. Not a good idea, as it turned out.
In EVE Online, the in-game license PLEX is one of the most valuable trading goods. By redeeming them, players receive game time in the Pay2Play MMO.
An item is worth 20 dollars if bought from CCP, or a corresponding amount of ISK, the in-game currency. 84 PLEX would be worth around 70 billion ISK.
Why the player Ozuwara thought it was a good idea to carry all 84 of these PLEX in a Rookie ship is not documented. However, the outcome was clear: another pilot shot him down.
But the killer, a guy named Diorden, couldn’t rejoice over a financial windfall for Christmas. All PLEX were vaporized with the destruction of the ship. Developer CCP thus received about $1500 without those items ultimately being able to purchase game time.
Now that’s an effective money sink.
