Homestead, the housing update for The Elder Scrolls Online, will be released on February 6, 2017 for PC and on February 21 for PS4 and Xbox One. In Homestead, you can purchase up to 39 different houses and countless furnishing items. But how do you get the houses and furniture?
The real estate market of Tamriel
There are three ways to acquire a house in The Elder Scrolls Online. In the following list, we present all the methods. Houses, by the way, are accessible to all heroes of your account. So if one hero buys a house, all other characters on your account also gain access.
- Crown Store: If you have a bunch of crowns, you don’t need to do anything else than open the Crown Store and select the house of your choice under the tab “Houses.” There you can see all available houses and you can tour them before you buy. There’s even a fully furnished version for sale if you have enough real money crowns.
- Canthion, the house broker: The broker Canthion will grant you a free house if you complete a quest for him. As a thank you, you’ll receive a small inn room from the faction of your choice. You can find Canthion – depending on your alliance – in Vulkhel Guard, Daggerfall or Davon’s Watch. You can also do this quest with different heroes and thus snag the rooms of the other alliances.
- Find a house: If you find a house in the open world of Tamriel, you can purchase it for the listed price in gold. However, the house always comes unfurnished, with only a few lamps included. Fully furnished houses are only available for real money. With the exception of two special buildings, the “Earthtear Caverns” and the “Great Topal Hideaway,” all houses can be purchased with in-game currency. The prices range from 3,000 gold for a simple inn room to 3.7 million gold for a princely estate! Remember that sometimes you may need to complete specific quests if you want to buy a house with gold.

Off to Fantasy-Ikea!
If you have a house, you can decorate it to your heart’s content. For this, you need furniture and decorations that you can either craft (but you must first acquire the recipes) yourself or purchase from specific vendors (you can find them in Coldharbour and in the major cities of Tamriel). You can also loot certain furnishings from enemies, fish them up, or steal them from chests.
If you have an item, you can place it in the room or any available outdoor area using the housing menu. You may arrange an object freely, rotate it, and even place it hovering in the room. Even your pets and mounts can be used as decoration in the house – as well as your assistants from the Crown Store. However, each house has a limit on the number of placeable items. So you can’t place unlimited stuff:
- Room: 15 items
- Apartment: 30 items
- Small house: 100 items
- Medium house: 200 items
- Large house: 300 items
- Mansion: 350 items
Those who have subscribed to ESO Plus get double the allowed decorations. If your subscription expires, you will keep the existing decorations but will not be able to add more items beyond the regular limit until you renew your subscription.
