Middle-earth is full of mysterious beings, yet not all of them made it into Peter Jackson’s well-known movies. One of them is particularly mysterious and presumably belongs to the nature spirits of Tolkien’s world.
Who is meant? Even her name sounds pleasantly natural: Goldberry. She is a character from J.R.R. Tolkien’s world and appears in “The Lord of the Rings.” There she acts as the wife of Tom Bombadil, who is also a character that remains puzzling to fans to this day.
Goldberry is no different. Her short appearance leaves an impression, especially on the hobbits around Frodo who meet her. Just before, Tom Bombadil saved the group in the Old Forest from the Old Man Willow, a malevolent tree that corrupted the nature around it.
Together, they go to Bombadil’s house, where they meet Goldberry. She takes in the travelers, tells them about her husband, and eats with them. She appears to the hobbits as extremely friendly, and her appearance makes an impression.
Goldberry is an elegant person, her hair is long and golden, she wears silver-green clothing and adorns herself with flowers. Generally, she is rather quiet and reserved. However, when she speaks, her voice sounds like the babbling of a river. This is not a coincidence, for although the hobbits are unaware, Goldberry is anything but an ordinary inhabitant of Middle-earth.
Daughter of the River
What kind of being is Goldberry? Like Tom Bombadil, Goldberry is a mysterious character about whom not much is known. Where she comes from and what her exact origins are is unclear. However, she is referred to by Bombadil as the “Daughter of the River.” This indicates that Goldberry is neither a human nor an elf but a spirit being of the nearby river Withywindle.
This river flows from the Barrow-downs through the Old Forest, further through the Marish in the Shire, until it eventually joins the great Brandywine River. Goldberry is the daughter of the river-woman who lived in this river. The river-woman does not herself appear; she is only mentioned by Tom Bombadil.
As a river spirit, Goldberry is most likely immortal, yet she appears in a form reminiscent of an elf or human. She is most likely inspired by nature spirits from English folklore.
The author and Tolkien expert John D. Rateliff even assumes that Goldberry belongs to the Maiar – thus to the most powerful and oldest beings that ever existed in Middle-earth (via lotr.fandom.com). Sauron was also one of them. They could change their shape at will, which would explain why Goldberry appears in the form of a woman even though she is actually a spirit being.
What is certain is that she is clearly associated with the element water and, according to a letter from Tolkien, also has influence over the seasons (via ardapedia.org). But what stands out the most is her character. Her conscious, elegant demeanor and cheerful temperament captivate not only the hobbits. Even Tom Bombadil could not help but be fascinated by it.
How did Goldberry and Tom meet? The hobbits encounter the two only in the Third Age. Long ago – when exactly is unclear – Tom Bombadil set out to seek the region of Eriador in the northwest of Middle-earth. On his way, he was stopped by the inhabitants of the area who wanted to capture the mysterious wanderer.
Goldberry was swimming in the river Withywindle and pulled Bombadil under the water by his beard. By the power of his voice, he was able to stop the river spirit and was released. However, this story did not end there.
Already the next day, Bombadil returned and asked for Goldberry’s hand. Shortly thereafter, the two were married.
Why doesn’t Goldberry appear in the movie? The character, like Tom Bombadil, fell victim to the fact that Peter Jackson had to make tough decisions in his film adaptation. Not all characters and side stories had room in the film.
For this reason, the hobbits’ excursion into the Old Forest is missing. This is very unfortunate for fans of the source material, as two of the most mysterious figures are absent, but it likely benefited the already proud runtime of the films to forgo Goldberry and her husband.
While Tom Bombadil does not appear in the films, he does show up in Amazon’s series The Rings of Power in the second season. Goldberry cannot be seen, but her voice can be heard, which enchanted the hobbits.
