On Reddit, trainers compare the current state of Pokémon GO with a few years ago. And they come to a clear conclusion.
A few years ago, a global pandemic kept the world on edge: Corona. While it changed daily life for many people overnight, brought restrictions to daily routines, and forced many employees to work from home, it also impacted Pokémon GO.
While people were urged not to leave their homes, the developers of Pokémon GO had to respond. After all, the game is primarily played outdoors and not from home.
On Reddit, some trainers compare the state of Pokémon GO back then with the current state of the game. And they come to a clear conclusion.
Raids for Everyone
What did the post creator find better in the past? In the post on Reddit, which has now received over 4,600 upvotes, the state of the game in 2021 is compared to the current state. The post creator lists the following points:
2021:
- Remote Raid Pass for 100 coins
- 3 Remote Raid Passes for 250 coins
- 1 Remote Raid Pass per week for 1 coin
- No limit for remote raids
- 20% chance to receive a legendary Pokémon as a reward in the battle league
- Incense attracted a Pokémon every 40 seconds, even without movement
- Community Days lasted 6 hours
- Event Pokémon made up the majority of spawns in the wild
2025:
- Events every weekend, short duration, at specific locations to create FOMO (“Fear of missing out”)
- Previously free event content now hidden behind tickets that must be bought with real money
- Rising prices
- Spawns in the wild are so thinned out that it’s hard to hunt specific monsters
Especially the cheap remote raid passes available back then often lead to nostalgic comments in the Pokémon GO community. Nowadays, a single remote raid pass costs a hefty 195 coins, while the 3-pack is available for 525 coins.
What does the community say about it? Besides the high number of upvotes, there are also some comments under the post that agree with the creator or mention other points that have worsened over time.
- “Man, I just want to go back to the days when we received legendary monsters through our research breakthroughs,” writes DarthDeimos6624
- “I wish remote raid passes were easier to obtain,” says comicrun96
- “I agree with you. Especially since there are too many events,” comments DaLordOfDarkness
- “We had it so good back then. You could play whenever you wanted, and all content was available to everyone everywhere,” says Entire_Pineapple4732 as well.
- “Niantic has ‘ruined’ the game in the long term. There was absolutely nothing forcing them to ‘realize their vision’ by reversing the COVID changes. They made more money during COVID and players were happier,” writes the post creator, Foulmouth232
Not only does the time of Corona represent a significantly better time for some trainers than what they have today in Pokémon GO. MeinMMO author Paul Kutzner misses a time in the game that dates back even further than the Corona period: The best time of Pokémon GO will never return.
