EA has released a new sports game. However, there is no Steam or PC version. This could also be due to EA investing little love in its PC ports.
Which game has EA released? With EA Sports College Football 25, Electronic Arts has launched a new sports game, and this is a real surprise. Because the last college football game from EA is over a decade old.
Especially the player numbers are surprising: The colleagues from PCGamer report that over 600,000 people were online simultaneously even during the early access phase of the game. By the way, only players who purchased the premium edition for 100 euros can participate in the early access phase. Accordingly, the revenue for EA is likely in the millions.
Also surprising: PC players are not allowed to participate because EA has no plans for a PC release.
Sports games have never been as successful on PC as on consoles
Why isn’t EA Sports College Football 25 coming to PC? At this point, no one truly knows, as EA has not commented on it. They only stated that a PC release is not planned. Those who want to play college football will have to do so on a console, whether they like it or not.
The most obvious reason for many players, however, is that the PC has never been the platform for sports games. Games like EA FC (formerly FIFA) have mainly thrived on consoles. This is also evident in how little time and energy EA invests in its official PC versions:
- The Steam version of Madden 24 has been rated as “mixed” with fewer than 7,000 user reviews. Many complain about the outdated technology and other issues. In Madden, EA has also had the bad habit of porting the last gen version for PC instead of the new version.
- EA FC / FIFA has been criticized for a long time for bringing new technology to PC far too late and the PC version still being at the level of Xbox One and PS4. And this despite the fact that the PC is significantly faster. The game currently has about 80,000 reviews on Steam with a “mixed” rating (54%).
For many, the absence of a PC version of EA Sports College Football 25 is exactly the indication that PC is simply not important enough for sports games.
On the other hand, Electronic Arts is not really doing anything to convince PC players of its sports games: Many players simply no longer want to play an outdated version for older consoles on PC, especially when important features are missing. Why should one buy the inferior version when one can also opt for the better version on PS5 or Xbox Series X?
By the way, it’s not the first time that Electronic Arts has been criticized for weak PC ports. There was already heavy criticism for the catastrophic technology in a new “Star Wars” game.
