The dynamic weather in Pokémon GO boosts the attacks of your monsters and rewards you with more Stardust. We explain how this works here.
This week, Niantic made the big announcement that new monsters from the 3rd generation will appear in the game. At the same time, they stated that the weather will play an important role in Pokémon GO in the future.
The dynamic weather will now also be displayed in the game and has significant consequences. On a rainy day, you will find more Water Pokémon and receive more Stardust for catching a Water monster.
Weather conditions in Pokémon GO explained
The weather in the game will now adapt even better to the environment. With the weather update, it will rain in the game when it is also raining at your location. In general, you will see more variety in the in-game sky. This also affects the spawn locations, attack values, and Stardust rewards of various Pokémon.
Niantic presented six different weather conditions that will be taken into account in the game:
- Sunny
- Partly Cloudy
- Windy
- Fog
- Rain
- Snow

If you want to catch a specific Pokémon, you can use the weather to your advantage. In rainy weather, you will find Water Pokémon like Mudkip more frequently in the wild. If it is sunny outside, your chances of spawns from Fire Pokémon increase.
And the good thing is: if you catch the monsters in their favorite weather, the Stardust rewards for the catch also increase.
How the game changes in the rain, we show you in the following video:
The video shows that Water, Electric, and Bug-type Pokémon appear more frequently in the rain and provide additional Stardust when caught.
Another bonus is increased battle values. Research is still ongoing on how this manifests in the game.
Higher spawn rates, better battle values, and more Stardust apply to these Pokémon types under the following weather conditions:
- In Wind: Dragon, Flying, and Psychic
- In Snow: Ice and Steel
- In Fog: Dark and Ghost
- In Clear Weather: Grass, Ground, and Fire
- In Rain: Water, Electric, and Bug
- In Clouds: Fairy, Fighting, and Poison
With the new weather features, there is again more variety in Pokémon GO and perhaps even reasons to go hunting in bad weather. How do you like the weather change?
Or are you only thinking about the Hoenn monsters and ignoring the weather? Then be well informed beforehand: These are the most important Pokémon of the 3rd generation
