In Dreams, players should be able to create their own games on PlayStation. After 3 years, the developers will discontinue support in 2023.
What kind of game is this? Dreams is a game by Media Molecule that was released exclusively for PlayStation in February 2020.
In Dreams, it’s about accessing a toolbox of various tools and then creating your own game and sharing it in an online library with other players.
Accordingly, Dreams is characterized by two fundamental gameplay aspects:
- creating your own creations
- finding and playing creations of other players
Developing your own games on PlayStation? That was a revolutionary concept for consoles. However, the desired success apparently did not materialize.
How this can look in practice, you can see in the trailer for Dreams:
The support wanes, but creations remain
What’s next for Dreams? The developers of Dreams announced on April 11, 2023, that there will be no more events or updates for the game. Media Molecule will officially discontinue support on September 1, 2023.
However, you will still have the opportunity to create your own creations after September 1, share them with others, or access created creations (via indreams.me).
Are there similar games? Yes, the popular free-to-play title “Roblox” follows a similar principle to Dreams. You can create various levels and games and share them with other players.
Additionally, Dreams has recently gained a new competitor in the “genre” with Fortnite. There, players can also create their own games, maps, or modes with the “Unreal Editor for Fortnite” released in March 2023 and make them available to other players.
Players can then find your creations in Fortnite with a code and play them. However, Epic Games prohibits works that violate the copyright of other games. For example, you may not recreate maps from Call of Duty.
